Sailors win one,
lose one Inst week
The Goderich Sailors scored
four unanswered goals in the
final 20 minutes to defeat Port
Elgin Sunocos 7-3 last Friday,
March 9 in Goderich. The win
-gave Goderich a 3-1 led in the
series
Tom-(erawford, Austin Fults,
Frank Hagan, Bill Callow, Jim
Farrish, Ron Miller and Jim
Hayter scored for Goderich.
Dean Symons scored twice for
Port Elgin. Lee Grant scored
the other Port Elgin' goal.
The Sailors built up a 3-0
with 1() minutes gone in the
first period. but Fort Elgin
came back in the final 10
minutes of the first period and
the second period to tie the
game
Tom Crawford opened the
scoring at 0:38 of the first
period after Port Elgin goalie
Earle •Grant was called for
delay of game. Wayne Doak
assisted on the goal.
Austin Fults made it 2-0 at
6:51 from Wayne Doak and Jim
Farrish- The goal resulted from
a scramble in front of the net.
Frank Hagan increased the
Goderich lead to :3 at 7:24 from
Fred Armstrong. Hagan picked
up the rebound and fired it
home.
Lee Grant -got Port Elgin on
the score board at 17:Ot,of the
first froth Ross Dudgeon.
A defensive lapse cost
Goderich Port Elgin's second
goal. Dean Symons scored at
9:17 of the second from Barry
Walker and Garry- Grant.
Walker stole the puck at the
Goderich blueline and was -
allowed to skate in unmolested.
He went behind the net 'and
passed the puck to Symons who
beat Rob Kellestine low to his
stick side.
Bob Dick was in the penalty
box when Symons scored the
tying, goal at 11:37. Symons
-,-went in' alone on Kellestine and
slid the puck along the ice.
Kellestine stopped the puck but
it 'must have been across the
line..Kellestine argued -the call
and when he persisted was
given,a 10 minute misconduct.
Bill Gallow scored the win-
ner at 8:26 of the third
unassisted. It was his- fourth
goal .in tie last. two games and
three of the . goals were
backhanders, including. this
one:
Gallow picked • up a loose
puck in front .of the Port Elgin
goal, and backhanded the puck
to Grant'sstick side. Jim
Farrish heat Grant at 9:11 from
Wayne Doak. Farrish picked up
Doak's•rehound and heat him
with a wrist shot.
Ron :Miller made it 6-:3 at
11:28 from -Jim Hayter and
Torn Crawford. Jim Hayter
drove a hard slapshot from
twenty feet out,,lo complete the
scoring. Tom Crawford assisted-

Three' of goals-
were

Elgin scored once on the power
play.
Goderich started the game
off forcing Port Elgin to make
mistakes hut let up after going
ahead 3-0. Port Elgin con-
trolled play In the final five
minutes of the first period and
the entire second period.
Rob Kellestine came up with
another great game in goaiil for
Goderich. He was very effective
in the second period and start
of the third when Port Elgin
was pressing..
Wane Fisher and Bill Frit-
zley continued being second
goalies by blocking several
shots.
The attendance for the game
was approximately 1,300,
Port Elgin took the fifth
game of the series--ti•3 in Port
Elgin last ;Sunday, March 11 to
force a- sixth game It was one
of Goderich'i poorest efforts of
the year. The forwards were
not playing thea% usual strong
forechecking game and the
_defence was leaving hien open
in front of the net. - Chuck
Jewell kept the Sailors 'in the
game for. the first two periods.
Port Elgin led throughout
the entire, game. After a
scoreless first period Les
Kingston opened the scoring at
2:29 from Ross Dudgeon.
Goderich was playing cine man
short at the time.
Austin Fults tied the g;arne at
5:57 from Jim Farrish and Dirk
W'oIterbeek. Felts put the,
rebound past Earle Grant on
his stick side. Barry Walker put
Port Elgin back in .front at 7:42
from Garry Robertson and Jim
Abbotts.
Walker drove - a low shot
which was deflected by a
Godeltch player. Port Elgin
broke the game wide open with..
four goals in - the first eight
minutes of the third period.
Ron Bell scored at 2:35 from
.Rick Schell. Les Kingston made
it 4-1 at :1:10 from Lee Grant.
Bell picked up his second
go, 1 of the game at 7:20 from
'Rick Schell.
Ross ' Du_dgeon scored the
final Port Elgin goal at 8:09
from Les Kingston and ,at
Ab-
botts. Dudgeon walked in alone
and tucked the puck through
Jewell's legs.
Goderich started to move in
the final six- minutes of the
game -with two goals. Wayne
Doak drove a slapshot from the
blueline which beat Grant to
his stick side. Bill Gallow
assisted on the goal at 13:25.
Ail McDougall drove home
Tom Crawford's rebound at
19:30 to round out the scoring.
Goderich took. 8 of 14 minor
penalties called in the game.
Port Elgin outshot Goderich
in -the game 37-27.
- The sixth game of the series
was placed last night, Wed-
nesday, in Goderich.

Novice All-stars
eliminated in finals

The Goderich Legion Novice
All -Stars were eliminated from
`further pl-ay .in the O.M.H.A.
Zone finals' by Stoneybrook last
weekend.
Stonevhrook took the best of
three series in two games by
scores of 7-4 and 4-3.
In the Saturday game, prayed
here before a large crowd, it
was a question of too much
Philip Smith for the Legion-
taires. The big Stoneybrook
captain fired -three first period
goals to put Goderich in a hole
in the early going.
However. the Legionnaires
came hack in dramatic fashion
in the second period to tie the
score on two goals by Larry
Madge and one by Robert
McDonald. Madge's first goal
came on a play where he took a
pass fr.otn defenceman . Danny
Maillet, and went through the
Stoneybrook defence. to scare.
, McDonald then connected on a
hard slap shot from the right
side after taking a pass from
Jim Costello. The tying goal
came On a three-way passing
play, from Mike Hodges to
Robert McDonald to Larry
Madge who deflected
McDonald's pass. into the top
left hand corner of the net.
''Smith 1;cored the Fla head
goal, his fourth of the night, for
Stoneybrook near the end of
the second period.
,A powerplay goal in -the first
minute of the third period by
Danny. McGuire •gave
Stonevhrook a two -goal lead,
and that ,was upped. to three by
Andy Evans -goal minutes later.
Goderich's Mike Hodges scored
on a breakaway to make 0 6-4.
Coach Dori Elliott then
pulled goalie Steve Gallow. in
an. effort to close the gap in the
final minute, -'but Danny
McGuire scored - on the empty
net to make the final score 7-4.
Tht? Sunday -game in London
was closer and provided what
Stoneybrook coach Dave Evans
called the hest hockey he had
seen this year. The Legion-
naires played inspired hockey,
overcoming a 2-0 deficit
Stoneybrook had built up on
goals by Philip Smith and And','
Evans.
John Huff got the first,,
Goderich goal, firing in a
rebound off Larry Kelly's shot
and 'Danny Maillet tied the
score on an end = to ,end rush.'
Larry Madge's goal early in the
third period but Goderich in
the lead for' the first time in the
game. He connected on passes
from Jim Costello and Robert
McDonald.
Danny McGuire tied the
`game for Stoneybrook and then
Philip Smith scored with only
two minutes left to give
Stoneybrook the game and the
series.
Despite the loss, Legion
coaches Don Elliott-- and
Richard Madge were proud of
the effort put 'up by their team.
This Saturday, the Legion-
naires will' be playing in the
-BramptotY Novice 'I'oiir'nament
against Saltfleet: *They will
play a two- game total- goals

Mark Jenkins scored two
goals last Wednesday to lead
Holmesville't,{i a 3-2 win over
the KFC Juveniles which gave
Holmesville the semi-final
series 2-0 with one game tied.
Jenkins 'also assisted on
Holmesville's other goal scored
by John Cosgrove. Lee Arbour
scored both Juvenile goals.
Jenkins put Holmesville out,
in front early in the first period
at the eight second mark.
Jenkins carried the puck into
the Juvenile ' end from- the
opening face off and caught•

at 2:54 with an unassisted ef-
fort. Arbour fired a low shot
from the right, hand side. Doug
Marshall set Arbour up for his
second goal at.7:26. He fired a
hard slapshot from the

John Cosgrove tied the game
at 13:25 of" the third after a
'scoreless:- second period.
Cosgrove slid the puck along
the ice through a maze of legs.
Bob Simmie and Mark Jenkins
assisted on the goal. Jenkins
scored the winner at 18:54 from
Paul McKellar and John
Cosgrove..
Each team was given six
minor penalties. Dan Duncan
of the Juveniles was given five
minutes for butt ending and
Jim Mc,Ivor of Holmesville was
assessed a 10 minute miscon-
duct.
Dave Graf scored three goals
to lead .DRMcO td a 5-1°vic-
tory over Holtn sville in the
first game of their best of three
final. The second game was
played `Tuesday in Clinton. A
third, if - necessary will be
played Sunday in Goderich.
Dave Graf scored three for
DHMCO with singles going to
Del Bedard and Bob Papple.
Pete Postill scored for
Holmesvillet.
Graf gave DRMCO a 2-0 lead
with two unassisted first period
goals at 7:55 and 12:34. Pete
