Ke.p these points in mind
you are thinking
Thinking of carpeting for
vour home'' Here are a few
points to remember.
First of all, the must expen-
sive carpet is not necessary, or
even desirable. for all parts of
the house. Carpets are made m
varying grades to suit all
requirements. Little -used areas
in the home, such as bedrooms,
require an inexpensive carpet,
while heavy traffic areas, such
as stairs, halls and livingroonr,
require the most -expensive car-
pet you can afford to buy.
Because of the < arving cc►n-
dit.ions of use and care in dif-
ferent homes, manufacturers
are reluctant to set a minirnum-
life guarantee on their
products, and unfortunately,
most people do not realise that
't jtless they can afford a top
price of $30.UU per square yard,
they cannot expect to buy a car-
pet that will last a lifetime.
Therefore, if \our budget is
low, it is butter to stick to
polished floors -and scatter rugs
than to buy a cheap carpet that
will not stand up to wear.
ce you have definitely
decide favour of carpeling
over polished floor, shop for
quotations 00 vour -carpeting
lob to get the best 'possible
price., Have the dealer put in
writing exactly what his price
includes and .what type of un-
derlay will be provided. When
you decide on a supplier, ask
for a small sample of the
material so you can compare it
when the -truck. rolls ,up to the
door. That's your good money
aboard the truck so protect
your investment'
The hazard of fire is always a
consideration when purchasing
a carpet. Flammability depends
oh many factors such as (1 )
type of fibre or blend (2) con-
struction (3) weight (4) weave
-- open weaves burn more
easily (5) surface — fluffy sur-
faces are more flamniable.
Wool carpet is the least flam-
mable of all natural fibres,
while cotton is the most flam-
mable, but can be made flame
carpet
resistant.
The synthetic fibres also
present their 'problems as fire
hazards. Rayon, acetate and
tri -acetate are as flammable as
cotton -but can be treajed. The
nylon, polyester and acrylic
fibres are moderately flam-
mable, but once on fire tran-
melt and drip, adding a deep -
burn hazard. 'I'o combat this
problem, the federal Depart-
ment of Consumer and Cor-
porate Affairs is working to
develop. standards for flame
resistance, and will' bring in
legislation as flame retardants
are. perfected.

being. Coughing is one way the
body tries to get rid of excess
phlegm and mucus. ,Normally,
mucas moves from the
breathing passages up toward
the mouth, swept along by tiny
k►roomlike structures called
cilia. The 'moving carpet of
mucus collects dirt and germs
along the way. But when the
cilia stop moving the mucus ac-
cumulates. Especially at night.
Coughing in the morning
shakes loose this' sticky collec-
tion of mucus, dirt, and germ'S.
But in the meantime, the dirt
irritates the air passages and

the germs have a chance to
-reproduce and invade the body
tissues.
Smoking just one cigarette
slows down the action of the
cilia and interferes with the up-
ward trip of the moving mucus.
Heavy smoking completely
paralyzes the cilia and leaves
the bronchial tubes, which con-
nect the lungs and the wind-
pipe, open to all kinds of infec-
tion_. Once the bronchial tubes
are irritated for long periods,
excess, mucus is secreted con-
stantly. Then coughing becomes
compulsive.

About 2,000 Canadian
children under 15 die each year

Canada Safety Council.
The Industrial Accident

most 'of these child fatalities
can be prevented. "
