Barnum and Bailey Circus have their winter quarters here in Venice, Florida and The Greatest Show on Earth works '!'for months preparing their next edition. This Fear 'was their 102nd Edition and it was, in- deed a most exciting event of sight, sound and THRILLS The show is planned a year ahead, when ideas for the new show's production themes are formulated. Once an idea is discussed, the costume designer, for instance, makes many- rough -;sketches. The people and animal' costumes are often changed or scrapped after Mr- Irving Feld, President Producer, and Stage Manager Richard Barstow go over them. Designer Don Foote then prepares large full-color drawings illustrating the costume in. detail. (Wilf and Muriel Reinhart — whom you all know, have a very clever daughter who does this very same work — and some day she will have her name listed prominently on some big stage production). Mr. Foote said fabrics for this year's wardrobe came from eleven different countries Millions of sequins, tens of thousands of rhinestones, jewels and mirrors were all sewn on by hand by hundreds of skilled' workers who work year-round on the costumes. He makes test versions of a costume in muslin. After it is corrected and re- done it is then cutin the actual fabric, the embroidery and other trimmings added, final adjustments made on _ the r blanket for instance may have as many as 'a thousand separate mirrors — all hand sewn! Often last minute problems come up and they could be up all night re -doing something they discovered,,, wrong. - . His biggest night of the year is the first dress rehearsal as it parades into the yenice arena. He then finds himself `'plan- ning how to make even more elaborate and more beautiful costumes for the next spec- tacular edition. After the initial parade - around the arena introducing everyone singly or in groups according to their act, the three rings and the perimeter come to life. The fellows around. the outside edges are tie set. changers and believe' rite they are FAST. When an act is over the clowns dash in and there is so much happening you hardly notice the next act is being set up. • The performers are beautiful women and handsome,..men and tops in their particular style of performance.
