say,
no arrangement
The Save the Jail Society
learned at a rally on Tuesday
evening that no decision regar-
ding the fate . of the former -
Huron County Jail, or the wall
which was to be torn down. will
be made until April 1.
Don Southtott, Progressive
Conservative candidate in'the
upcoming March 15 by election,
made the announcement when
he addressed the -meeting held
at the Goderich and District
Collegiate -Institute.
Mr. Southcott told about 50
persons at the meeting that he
had been assured by Huron
-Lotrnty--Wart$ n --Roy- Pattision
and county property chairman
Harold Lobb that the decision
would be postponed.'
The delay was agreed upon
to see what action the Provin-
cial Government will "take on
the recommendations of a task
force looking into the preser-
vation of historical and ar-
chitecturally • significant
buildings in Ontario.
The Ontariii Cabinet has
a1r'eady approved tlhe task
force's findings -in principal,
Mr. Southcott explained to the
meeting. and legislation is
being dratted which 'may give
municipalities -power to
designate historical buildings
that should be preserved. •
If this legislation,, were
passed the municipality would
also have the power -to
safeguard preserVation of such
designated :structures and Con-
trol any alternations or
renovations by building
owners.
The P.C. candidate said that
he could not guarantee that the
legislation would make the
thro;rae speech. as 'it has vet to be'
officially passed by the
management board and- then
the cabinet.
Other parts of the task- forces
report would set up a provin;
cial- program for funding such
hprojects as were designated
istorical sites in Ontario':
"I can not promise such fun-
ding will be very large," Mr.
Southcott noted, "even if it is
officially passed."
As a result of these task force
recommendations Mr. South-
cott said that it seemed to him
"Prudent not to make any
decision regarding the jail 'at
this time."
'Answering, to criticism of
County authorities - Mr.- South-
cott said he was sure the
County had acted "sensibly and
with some feeling so far."
"The present Huron County
Museum received very little
help from the'province, he
pointed out, "and the County
could not commit itself to
another long term financial
support which the whole
County must help pay through
taxes."
"The funding requirements
are heavy enough " the P.C.
candidate said, "that I suggest..
this group (Save the Jail
Society) change its position to
that of an ally with ,the county_
and put emphasis on raising
funds that will be needed to
save the jail."
"Lotteries -`are one "of those
possible areas," ''he said, "and
I'm sure former Goderich
mayor Ernie Fisher who is in -
charge of lottery licences ,will
be most helpful in --that
respect.''
On Wednesday morning

in its early formation, .said he
wanted to make it clear that he
had "withdrawn as , an active
member of the society until af-
ter the March 15 by election -
which I am contesting."
An executive was elected at
the meeting. Interim president
Joan Van ,den Broeck was re-
elected to the President's seat.
,Ron Shaw was selected as vice
president, Mrs. Dorothy
Wallace as secretary and Brian
HallAs Treasurer.
"If
arrangement made,"
"it was not official."
Goderich Reeve - Deb
Shewfelt v' said that he had
'provided- Mr. Southcott with
the phone numbers of Property
Committee members but said
he did not know if any meeting
ever took place. -
Robert ' Ly,ons, another
property committee member,
was contacted Wednesday -mor-
ning as well and said that he
knew "nothing about any
meeting bet -ween Mr-Sohcott
and the Property Committee."
Property Committee chair-
man' Harold •Lobb could not be
reached for comment on Wed-
nesday morning. -
Liberal candidate in the up-
coming election Jack Riddell
told the meeting that everyone
working to save the jail was ta,
be commended. "Too long," he
charged, "we, have been
destroying our heritage."
"It is ironic that one arm of
government is saying save old
buildings and another arm, the --
assessment office, is in effect
saying -pull it down. It is the
(east we can do to save this
monument to the work. of our
forefathers in Huron."
"If I were elected. to a
position of influence I -would do
everything in my power to post
pone destruction of that jail
wall. riot only until April 1. but
forever and a day."
New Democratic Candidate
Paul Carroll told the meeting
that he too wanted to preserve
the history thai the jail
represents. "I am not concerned
about it: future use so much as
