LEGION NOVICE
'ALL-STARS
The Legion Novice All -Stars
finisheditheir regular W.O.A.A.
schedule last weekend with a
pair of shutout4victories that
clinched first place for them.
Friday night in Goderich, the
Legionnaires blanked Mitchell
3-0, and then they .came right
back with a 5-0 whitewash over
Seaforth Saturday in, Seaforth.
The Goderich team thus
finished first with a record of
eleven wins and only one loss
in the regular schedule.
Against Mitchell, Jim
Costello scored two goals and
had one assist. The other
Goderich goal was scored .by
Larry Madge who also had one
assist, as did Robert
McDonald. Goderich scored
one goal each period enroute to
the win. Harold Sartori
registered the shutout
in the Legion goal.
In Seaforth, Goderich _held
only a one goal lead, 1-0, after
two periods of close checking
hockey, but broke the game
open with four goals in the
third period to record their 5 -0 -
victory.
Danny Maillet scored the
first Goderich goal, assisted by
Mark Rowe. Mike Hodges
made it 2-0 with his unassisted
goal. Larry Madge scored,
assisted by Robert McDonald
to up the margin to three, goals.
John Huff and Robert
McDonald scored to finish off
the scoring. Dan' Maillet

This Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
the Legionnaires will take on
the highly rated South-West
London Novice team in an
;.exhibition game lined up by
Legion manager Howard
Carroll to -get -the local club
ready for the, ,,up -coming
playoffs__
A new, system of playoffs" ina
troduced by the O.M.H.A. this
year will see the first round of
the playoffs consist of the
declaration of a group winner
from the W.O.A.A, league in
whijh Goderich played. That
winner, will then playoff with
the winners of the other groups
in the W.O.A.A. to arrive at a
zono .championship for Zone 7
of the O.M.H.A.
More details as to whom
Goderich will meet first in the
playoffs should be, available
soon.
The Legionnaires have
-----played----23 -games,' incittding
exhibitions, so far this season.
They have compiled an im-
pressive record of 17 wins, four
losses and two ties, while
scoring 102 goals and `having
just 39 scored „against.
Coaches Don Elliott sand
Richard Madge have good
reason Jo look. forward to the
playoffs with anticipation.
Goderich Sailors Jim Farrish and Wayne Doak teamed up
hate to score the second 'goal on way 'to a 6-3 victory over
the Walkerton Capitals on Friday night. Doak in front of the
net tipped Jim Farrish's pass behind the Walkerton goalie
early in the first period.
With the end of the N.H.L.
hockey season less than two
months away, it is time for the
"cellar -dwellers" to jockey for
'position with regard to draft
choiceg. Each team tries to lose
as many games as possible, at
least it seemed as if Toronto
and Vancouver both wanted to
lose last Saturday night. For
euample, the Leaf's had a three
on one break (orie, of many),
and Pierre Jarry decided to...,,.,.
stop and light a cigarete -
beautiful.
Certainly there are some
- promising Juniors graduating
this year - particularly Denny
Vervagaert and Reg Thomas of
the London. Knights.' Other
outstanding juniors who will go
early id? the draft are Ron
'Plumb, Denny Potvin and
Maurice Titanic.. The
"honontr" of first choice will go
to the N.Y. Islanders with
California and Vancouver
likely next in line. A fan of the
Islanders ,bet a fan of the4
Philadelphia 76ers basketball
team that the Islanders would
lose more games than the
76ers.
It should be close, and very
interesting.
The feature team of the week
is the New York Rangers who
are breathing down the necks
of the Flying Frenchmen. The
Rangers lost little to _ the,
W.H.A. and expansion draft,
and have solidified themselves
with a couple of good trades.
The Rangers are big and strong
down the:center with the three -°
Irishmen: Ratelle, Tkaczuk
and Stemkowski.
The defence, lec 4 by over-
rated - Brad Park and under-
rated Rod Seiling is healthy'
now and.the'goaltending'duo of
Ed Giacom,in and Gilles
Villemure is the best team in
the league.. With the Bruins
fading, the Broadway
Blueshirts may be the only
team with a chance to catch.
Voting for the Calder Trophy
(best rookie) should, prove to be
interesting this year. While no
one freahman playgr_.i.s_.stan__
ding out above the others, there
is a large contingent of new and
outstanding players.
In goal, John Adams
(Boston), Ron Low (Toronto),
and Dan Bouchard (Atlanta)
are having strong first years.
_On defence, Jimmy Schoenfeldt
of the Sabres leads• the way.
Other notable freshman
,rearguards are Thnmmie
Bergman (Detroit), Jim Mair
(Islanders), Randy- Manery
(Atlanta) and big Phil Russell
(Chicago). The forwards
having - creditable ,`rookie
'seasons are Jacques Richard
(Atlanta), Billy Harris (Islan-
ders), Don Tannahill (Van-
couver), John Wright (Van-
couver), - Steve Vickers
(Rangers), Errol Thompson
(Toronto) and Don Lever (Van-
couver).
I would like to•see a few rule
changes made. in the N.H.L. to

be called when thy puck crosses
the red line. A good. two to
three minutes of hockey are
wasted in a game while players
chase the puck the length of the
ice just to touch it. Secondly,
an automatic penalty should be
assessed to anyone deliberately
freezing the puck against the
boards. Thirdly, no icing
should ,be allowed when a team

owner of the California Golden
Seals, recently phoned his
World Series hero Gene Tenace
and asked him if he could
skate., Sorry
Charlie'..........Have to laugh at
Billy Reay, coach of the .Black
Hawks. The team wins five
games in a. row and Reay com-
plains that his club is incon-
sistent. Does that mean the
Leafs are consistent?
Gilles Marotte, the huge,
.
handsome defenceman for the
King's' was 'recently ap-
proached by a movie director at
Santa Monica beach and asked
if he would like to star in a
muscle beach movie. Replied
Gilles, '!Can I wear my
skates?"
The Canadiens' farm team,
the Nova Scotia 'Voyageurs will
challenge the.Stanley Cup win-
ners this year.
Jim Gregory, general
ma,,nager of the Leafs, has been
termed a stingy and stubborn
trader • by many other general
managers. in -the-N,H.L;. I. -must-
agree When -If -hear' that that a
fan offered him two chocolate
bars for half a bag of popcorn
at a recent Leaf game and
Gregory wouldn't trade unless
the fan threw "future con-
siderations" into the deal.,
See you next week. _
