and I tried to research. my. in-
formatioti:. and present it with
believable, and in most cases,
"provable" data.
Not so with some of the other
briefs that evening (January--
24—especially one from a Dr.
Michael Watts, who became
very emotional and made a
number of highly questionable
statements, such as
"snowrnobiling not a
healthy form of exercise."
That's fine; I'll accept that, IF
he had given us some rational
information to back up that
statement. Otherwise he
-becomes 'just another one of
these silly people wh,o rant and
rave on questionable' foun-
dations.
Dr. Watts claimed that
snowmobilet•s laughed at the
comments of those ,who
disagreed with them. If I
remember correctly, the
audience did indeed laugh—at
Mr. Don McKee of G.D.C.L
who made a statement that im-
plied the snowmobilers were
using up most of the natural
resources left in North
America-. That's worth
laughing at, isn't it? Even
"dumb" snowrnobilers can ap-
preciate that kind of humour.
The snowmobile industry is
young, growing_ fast and
making mistakes as it grows. It
is also trying very hard to
correct ' thein. What the in-
dustry, and those..connected
with it cannot do is eliminate
the influences of the -lunatic
fringe% which reasonable people
know is responsible for most of
the grievances regarding the
snowmobile.
'The industry was asked, for
instance, to reduce noise levels
to -82 decibels (A scale„ 50
feet) for all 1973 models. It
has met that requirement and.
will continue to meet further
requirements.
L challenge the critics to ef-
fect a similar . redtittion in'
noise.
Sincerely,
Dan Stuckey
Dear Editor:
During the past week," I was
requested to sign my name on a
pieceof paper. I asked what I
would be signing. The answer
was, To ,keep the jail wall.
When I refused, the"canvasser-
°said, Well -1 don't agree with it
either, but I got the job
anyway.
What kind of people do we
have canvassing. Are they just
stirring .up something as a
pastime, -surely they can't be
sincere in their project. -
I did say, that if it was a
petition to pull the whole
building down, I would sign
with pleasure.
We call. Goderich, The pret-
tiest town in Canada. How can
it be, with that monstrosity to
view; on entering Goderich,
from the north. Personally I see
nothing nice in the architecture
of the building. It was not built
with an eye to beauty, but as a
place for correction. It 'has ser-
ved its purpose, and I suggest it,
be pulled down.
Why so much interest all at
once, in a building for which, in
previous years I am sure, many
people held Contempt. There
can't possibly be happy
memories connected with it for
anyone. Viewing a place, wTich
must have held hours of mental
torture for some inmates, is
that where people get their
pleasure?
If the assessment office was
moved out of Huron County,
the people would be most in-
dignant. I am quite certain the
payroll from the office pours
more money into our • town,
than the number of tourists
would, who came to view the
jail.
Pull the eyesore down, and
give us an entrance to
Goderich, of which can be
justly proud.
Sincerely,.
Grace Neville.

Dear Editor:
Soccer is becoming part of
the physical education in
schools of Canada, a com-
petitive game ,that is accepted
by some 55 - countries of the
world as their national form of
sport.
- This game soccer sometimes
called the universal game,
because it provides the youth of
the world with the ultimate in"
physical,well being, has spread
itself like an epidemic across
the face of the universe,
through the medium of coaches
dispatched from, its original
nursery, Great Britain. These
envoys have proved so suc-
cessful, that todaythe original
teachers are constantly encoun-
tering, difficult r it Mtheir ahem
pts to' defeat"l'thcr pupils.
Wherein lies the appeal that
soccer has for all these nations
of the world? The reasons may
be summed up as follows': -
Soccer embodies all the bet-
ter qualities of akl other com-
petitive sports, Sikh as en-
durance, speed, bodily contact,
gracefulness,' body and self con-
trol, constant - movement ?with
few stoppages . of platy 'ani a
scientific" 'approach ttr e*'4etied
by any other group game.
A powerful physique is not
necessarily a _requisite. In-
dividual skill, speed and team
play are the paramount factors.
It provides an -excellent outlet
for those boys physically in-
capable ' of , playing such
strenuous' games as rugby.
For the—youth every soccer
game is a lesson in co-operative
effort. Soccer is a team game in
which all the players must com-
bine their efforts and in-
dividual skills if success is to be
attained.
Elaborate and costi3 equip-
ment is not essential, wherever
a piece' of ground or a gym-
anasi limy a ada_b_af .L.jx.ailahle
soccer may be played. Goals
can be improvised, therefore
cost of operation may be held
to a minimum.
As a medium ,of inducing
physical effort in the youth of
the world, 'soccer is unsur-
passed. All participants in the
game (less the goalkeepers) are
in constant, physical and men-
tal action thus all the players
profit by its health -giving
qualities.
The laws of the , game are
very simple, they may be w
readily understood by both -6'
players and spectators alike.
There are no hidden ball tricks,
the movements of both players_
and the ball are in constant
view,
The laws relative to the size
of the playing field, the number
of participants and tie Ai e pf
the ball may be, modified to
meet the needs of any school.
These conditions lend themself
admirably . to fit the
requirements. of ,the smaller
public school student.
If you are interested to see
indoor soccer, five . a side,
please come to St. Mary's
School on Sundays and see
your local talent practise in
senior sdccer by Goderich
• United Soccer Club which will
start playing soccer in London
soccerassociation early in May.
We hope that we .will get some
support from Goderich people
as all the Goderich players are
product of coaching by
Goderich minor soccer
organization and are our local
youth.
In London and District Soc-
,dcer Association For 1972
season the Sportsman of the
year was Harold Refflinghous
as he received most points from
opposing clubs, based on his
record with no cautions. and no
send-offs, we are proud to say
that Harold will play this year
for Goderich United Soccer
Club. No doubt St. Columban,
sincere and committed to what
we feel is in the best, interest of
our community.
If you are ;at a loss to under -
stand this, perhaps you should
ask yourself why the people .of
Stratford blocked the efforts of
their municipal Government to
demolish their old city hall (a
structure which required costly
and extensive repairs) or iwhy
the people of Kitchener are
(tying in their cups over the
lose of their old city hall?
Joan Van den Broeck
Interim Chairman of
Save the Jail Society
with whom he played last
season, will :miss him • very
much.
Yours in sport,
Kaz I3udny.

"Preschool clinics were star-

proved to be invaluable. Health
screening, vision, anaemia,
fluoride brushing, hearing, im-
munization were done. To this,
add for 1973, Denver Develop-
mental Screening and
urinalysis."
"In the 1960"s, 'a Beriatric

since I have been with the

deavouring to implement some
of the suggestions of this study.

"There has always been a
very good close working'
relationship with the
hospitals," claimed Miss
Malabar. "I, personally, have
seen the need for nurses in
various disciplines to get
together and' discuss their nur-
sing problems and priorities.

area I am really pleased I was

unit changed," she said. "Six
months after my arrival, Dr.

Acting MOH following the
resignation of Dr. -Evans. For a -

sequently he attended U. of
Toronto. His time spent at the
health unit was even more
limited.
"All this was a challenge for
any nursing supervisor," said
Miss Malabar, "and with such
a good staff that we have, it
was a refreshing two and one-
half years."
