ignify:
ar Editor,
This letter is a forerunner to
sample -type petition -which
ill be seen in your 'community
garding our County's
oposal to tear down the jail
aQ adjacent to the
ssessment Building in
oderich to make way for an
dition and, parking facilities:
Why concern?
The fort -like structure, which
situated on valuable land
s been considered ` "un-
oductive" ih the eyes of our
eves' since it lost its last in -
ate a couple of years ago.
herefore it is now considered
easible" to eat away at the
property for other County pur-
poses.
Should the County ahead
with its plans it will quite effec-
tively deface the building
which,, while over 130 years
old, is also architecturally
unique, strtfcturally sound, and
imposing in nature. The
Ministry of "Colleges and
Universities —Historical and_
Museums Branch, Archives of
Ontario is, interested in seeing
if -kept as a museum and feel it.
could become nationally and
internationally noteworthy --0
course, as such, it would divert
tourist interest to the entire
area.
There are three alternatives
open to Council which will
leave the jail intact. (i) The
acquisition or pro er to the
West which ' has een iii" `
vestigated as of January 26. (ii)
An addition to the, North with
parking option on Gloucester
Terrace. (iii) Huron County
owns the existing building.
There has been considerable
comment regarding over-
crowded County departments
and Court facilities unrelated
" to the Assessment function.
The County should consider a
new site for a larger
Assessment building and use
the existing site to alleviate
crowding in other departments:
The proposed solution not
only destroys the very,nature of
a historic landmark, but also
creates additional problems.
No allowance would be made
for additional parking and the
existing "cramped and cram-
med" appearance would
become even more so.
The jail, as it now stands; is
unique to North America and
has been publicized in both
Weekend magazine and " the
British Press. Furthermore, the
oldest Architects' ,magazine in
Britain has established a fund
to preserve this structure.
Interested persons in. the
Clinton area will find petition
forms in Joe Essex's B.P•::
Garage, Gord's Pool Room and
Vicki's Snack Bar.
Your coverage in helping us
maintain this important
humanitarian work has been
greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,

Koop jail iatect
Dear Editor:
In regard to the old jail, I
feel as if ere should be some
meas taken to preserve the
w"a1 s and maintain this
historical monument for the
town of ..Goderich.
I feel it would be disastrous
to destroy, the oldest jail in
Huron County, a heritage we
should_.al.bu prated of. There
a..,.uo13y' things. that. can .be
done with`the old jail and I
think it would be worthwhile to
put some of the previous
proposals into effect.
The jail represents a historic
landmark and I think it should
be respected and preserved in
its entirety. To tear down a wall
would be akin to the vandal
who broke the arm off the
Pietra, or removing the log
cabin from' the museum.
Sincerely, -
,,Joan Van den Broeck

TOWN AND SURROUNDING
CITIZENS:
While being interviewed by
CKNX reporter at County
Court House, Thursday -past, I
was questioned concerning the
attitude taken by . the tax-
payer's on the jail wall issue.
- During thepast few years,
I've had considerable ex-
perience .on petition work, but
yet to -see the people so upset
over a council, decision. Our
petitions are clearly worded
and all persons are asked; if in
doubt, to read the material-
- before signing. Some read,
some just ask what they're
signing for; but all the com-
ments are of a very concerned
nature.
The large majority just.,{,.
stand„ as. if in _a Itr nee, and
thee, ask, "why,,. 'Ney just
can't believe what they're
reading - but all sign. -
Others answer "what's ailing
that County Council", so I ex-
plain tel them that they need
more roomto enlarge the new
assessment building. Their an-
swer to that is '`They .should
never have built there in .the
first place - give me that paper,
we don't want that wall distur-
bed!"
Regardless of how serious
matters are, -there always seems
to be a runny- Side -to 'it. One •
person, while- several other ---
folks were signing, comes out
with this remark, "I'd hate to
see that old jail go, I spent 90.

Dear Editor,
In answer to Mr.
MacDonald's letter of January
25/73 in your paper, we wish to
inform all concerned that the
recent increase in milk price to
the consumer does vary, widely.
The increase price which the
producer was granted by the
Ontario Milk Marketing Board,
was 35 cents/100 lbs. This
amounts to an increase to the
producer of less than a cent per
quart.
We would like to make it
clear that the OMMB has no
,control orjurisdiction over the
retail milk prices.
Each producer contributes
monthly to a ' Provincial and
National advertising program -
to promote the sale .of milk.."and
milk products in 1.he various
media.
