BY W: , Elliott •
Donald Macdonald, of the
Inverness ' Macdonalds, was
slain in the famous Battle of
'ulioden in 1740. However, he
'had left at home a young
widow and four young children,
otherwise Mr. G. E. Anderson
of Ottawa, a descendant, would
,. not be writing to the Signal -
Star in 1972 for the obituary of
a kinsman, the late Sheriff
John Macdonald of Huron..'
On' April 16, 1740, disastrous
defeat .ended the hope of
Charles Edward.Stuart to„seize
the throne df, Britain. His High-
landers, tired by a night march
and starving fromlack of sup-
plies; were blown to pieces by
tie guns of the Duke of Cum-
berland. On that bloody field,
four miles east of Inverness,
1,000 of Charles” followers
were killed, 1,000 taken
prisoner by the English.
After the battle, English
soldiers visited the Macdonald
homestead and swept
-,..,everything off the place. Mrs.
' Macdonald lived to a great age,
well into the 19th century, and.'
. told the story of that day of
woe to her children.
