There's a.. typical Canadian
tragedy in the making right
now, and it may be too late to.
..=avert it,' unless there is a hue
and cry that will rattle the
halls of parliament.
I use the word "typical" .
because it has happened again
and again in this colrntry, and
vv,e haVe lived to regret it.
Prompted by political or
pecuniary motives, Canada has
gone a long way toward
destroying, its very self and the
things that make it most dear
to the average Canadian.
I am referring to pollution
and the disturbance of the
balance of nature. In the name
of progress we have fouled our
own nest, time and again, until
an outsider would think we en-
joyed -living-,ht. otrr ' own. mess.
Item. Lake Erie, with some
r
friendly, help from our -old bud-
dies, the Yanks, has been tur-
• ned into a vast cesspool, which
is 'almost unreclaiimable.
Item. Paper mills and other
industries have been pouring
their poisons into , Lake
Superior- 'for years.
Item. If you took a drink of
water out of Hamilton bay,
you'd • probably be rusting
within twenty-four hours.
• Item. Huge = industries con-
tinue to belch into the air over
our big cities, until you'd think
there was a continual fall of
black 'snow.
Item. Two of our magnificent
rivers, the Ottawa and the. St.
_ Lawrence, are ` running, open
sewers.
That's a very brief •sampling.
And now that idiot Bourassa,
prime minister of Quebec, in an
'attempt to save) face, .after
mishandling everything from
the FLQ kidnappings to the
unemployment situation, has

TODAY'S CHILD
BY HELEN ALLEN
THE TORONTO N.) SYNDICATE
"The thinker" is Norman, an engaging seven-year-old who,
truth to tell, is not often seen in such a contemplative. mood.
Norman is "all boy" -. Lively and on thio go —,loving rough
games. As well as having normal energy, he is hyperactive and
"impulsive. This is because of very slight brain damage, not
because he deliberately tries 'to misbehave'.
1#djwever,,he is among the top 10 in his, Grade twd class, -an
open concept type where each child progresses at his own pace.
llis teacher says that he. needs extra understanding and at-
tention but he is not a behavior problem 4,in class.
*titian enjoys almost all sports, both as a player and
spectator: Ile prefers the"'company of older children and often
plays football with older boys in his foster horde. Though he
can't yet swim, he loves ,the water and is keen on camping and
picnics.
Norman is fondof animals of all sizes. A special interest is
bugs, which he collects. Ile- likes to build things. Ile enjoys
l music, -especially singing, and loves to read' aloud from the
library books he regularly brings home.
Scottish in descent,, Norman is a healthy youngster except for
a tendency to bronchitis. He has blonde hair, blue eyes and fair
skin. Ilia glasses are to correct a slightly crossed eye.
Friendly; affectionate, inquisitive, talkative Norman needs
warm, patient parents who are able to give him understanding,
love and attention combined with firm control.
TO inquire about adopting Norman,' please write to Today's
Child, Box 888, Station K,' Toronto. For 'general adoption in-
fdrmatien please contact your local ChildreA•Aid Society.

But that's what we thought
about all the other signs of
"progress", is it, not?
"Oh, they'll never pollute the
Great Lakes. They're too big.
So dump the garbage boys, and
flush out the tanks,"
"What? Pollute the Ottawa
and the St. Lawrence? Im-
possible. Too much running •
water. Why should we build
sewage disposal plant? Let 'er
run into the rives."
"Don't be stupid. Squawk
about the big planta polluting
and there won't be no jobs for
nobody.", Y
We've said it all, and heard
it all. But what heritage are we
leaving behind for our children,
Interpret
new course
for nurses
The December meeting of the
Board of Trustees of the 1'erth-
Huron School of Nursing was
held in Stratford at the Nursing
School, The Nursing course to
be offered in January to April
was interpreted to the
meeting. The Curriculum
proposed by the Faculty was
recommended to be approved. '
A report from the Conestoga°
College on Nursing. Education
was reviewed. ' Should an
amalgamation of the present
Schools of Nursing move into
the Community College setting,
possible 'sites would be the
Doon, Guelph, and the Strat-
ford Centres., This report was
recommended to be tabled in
order ' The School Board of
Trustees consider the position
of the ' School regarding
amalgamation. '
° An analysis of the 1972 R.N.
results and ''the problem area
were -discussed. The need for a
School Counsellor was a
priority need for .973, was
stated .by .the principal Miss M.
Philpott.
Regarding the maintenance
of the school building, caulking
of the complete building ex-
terior is an imperative need,
this will be done as soon as
weather- conditions permit.
A social time which had a
Christmas atmosphere was en-
joyed when the Trustees joined
the members of Faculty in the
Games Room of the School.
and theirs? A great big pile. of

Letting • Bourassa and
boys play around .with the
James Bay project is like let-
ting a couple of bright science
students play around with a
. nuclear bomb.`
Here's the picture. The
Quebec government plans a
hydro project in the James Bay
area, one of the . last great
wilderness areas in eastern
North America. It is a maim -
moth scheme. Some estimates
place the cost at $10 billion.
Yep. Billion. Where is that
kind of money going to come
from?
Plap is to 'tinker with up to
ten dams and seven rivers
which run into James Bay. The
damage to the area affected,
170,000 square miles, 'larger
than the whole United
Kingdom, is incalculable.
The subLsoil, known to be un-
stable, has taken hundreds of
year? to build up on the solid
rock. The tremendous weight of
water, in the artificial lakes —
some of them 70 miles long —
could cause earthquakes, land-
slides, who knows what?
The lakes themselves are big
enough to affect the climate of
,the whole area. Worse, the
change in freshwater -flow into
James Bay could delay the
spring breakup in the Bay, and
make winter longer. This could
affect the temperature of the.
water flowing out of Hudson
Bay, which joins the Labrador
current going south, and this in
turn could make the whole
eastern seaboard colder.
Project this a little further
and it could affect the entire
fishing industry on the Atlantic
shores.
And worst of all is 'the
callous disregard of the native
peoples, of the area. They are
Cree Indians, who eke a
meagre living from the fish,
geese and moose of this bleak
area. These- people have never
been conquered, never sold
their land, and never ceded it
by treaty. They are to • be
uprooted and transplanted.
So we have the ironic spec-
tacle of the federal government
on the one hand creating vast
new national p ks, and, on the
other, condoniri, if not ap-
proving the passible destruction
of° another vast area. This is
not progress. This is rape.
And for what? Sure it will
create 'temporary "jobs 'in
Quebec, +for a large number. A
few People will become
wealthy.
But it will do nothing for the
long-term unemployment
t
situation in Quebec, where
unemployment seldom goes
below, ten percent. In a few
years the jobs will be finished,
a few guys at push -buttons will
be left, and the U.S. will have
another source of power. At
what cost?
