Sydney the Gateway '
Your first stop in Australia is
likely to -be Sydney, the South
Pacific's • largest and liveliest
metropolis. Sydney Harbour,
with its bold headlands, sheltered
bays and posh -clad islands, is one
of the most beautiful in the world.
Sydney is (Australia's oldest and
largest city, population two arid a
half million, capital of the State
of New South Wales.
Sydney is an outdoor city and
its beachside suburbs spread for
50 Miles along the Pacific coast.
To see the city best take a ferry
from Circular Quay to Manly
only a 35 -minute trip across the
busiest harbour in. the Southern
Hemisphere. Watch the colorful
activity ' on the harbour, alive
with ships flying the flags; of all
nations and hundreds of sailboats
scudding before- fresh breezes
blowing in from the blue Pacific.

addition to the international

motels, serviced apartments and

department stores and small
fashion boutiques equal to those
in most other countries.
Souvenirs like Australian opals,
cut and uncut, aboriginal hand-
crafts and paintings, kangaroo
and sheepskin coats and rugs are
all readily available, Australian

One Australian dollar is,

"This is the first time in On-
tario's history that any message
has been printed on ,provincial
licence plates," Premier
William .Davis said today as
Ontario prepared to issue new
multi-year `plates bearing the
phrase, Ontario-- Keep It",
Beautiful.
"But this is an important
and especially appropriate
'message in view of the number
of environmental problems that
.revolve' around . • the
automobile," Mr. Davis said.
"In a congested urban
situation, the auto, can be a
significant contributor to air
pollution."
"And we have discovered

"Ontario is committed to ex-
ploring and developing effec-
tive new solutions to urban
traffic problems as I indicated
last week," he said. "We are of-
fering every assistance to
Metropolitan Toronto : and
other cities in developing tran-
sit alternatives to relieve down-
town congestion."
Automobiles and their
drivers affect more than the
cities, Mr. Davis said. "A worn;

Tasmania
Across Bass Strait south of
Melbourne is the heart -shaped is-
land state of Tasmania. This is a
land of great scenic diversity.
You'll find towns with .an Old
World charm, rolling pasture-
land, quaint fishing villages, im-
penetrable rain forests,.wierdly-
shaped mountains reflecting in
placid water crater lakes,
beaches looping between surf -
lathered cliffs, white stone farm

Environment Minister James
Auld agreed. He said detailed
survey work conducted over the
past summer has given Ontario
a clear indication of the extent
of these problems.
"Our preliminary estimates
indicate there are at the very
least 400,000 abandoned cars
scattered '.over the face of the
province, and their; number is
growing every day," he said.
"During the next three years,
these hulks will be removed
and processed for re -use. We

Commenting on roadside lit-
tle, Mr. Auld said: "We can en-
force air and water pollution
control and waste management
programs, especially with the
co-operation of industry. We
.can work on the problems of
packaging, including
throwaway packaging, with the
producers and marketers.
But the individual bears the
ultimate responsibility for
where he discards his personal
trash." Mr. Auld said. "We can
only try to persuade him -- to
develop his personal concern in.
making Ontario a better place
to live."
Environment Ontario over
the past summer launched an
all-out drive tci reacthepublic
with the anti -litter message.
This drive included radio,

a survey of roadside litter con-
ducted by students hired under
the province's Project SWEEP

A parallel campaign was
maintained by, the container
and bottling 'industry. "We've
had reports 'from some of the.
people who ran the Littercheck
