Bend'bu
Voyageur proves out well
In ro ran* a -
a p . B ponso>red by
the U.S, Army, the Voyageur
Air Cushion Vehicle in•Dctober
successfully completed its first
ship -to -shore, military transport
trials.
I,n a 10 -day project, which
also marked the first salt water
operations: with the craft, the
40 -gross -toil Voyageur' hauled
cargo containers from ship to
shore and inland.
Developed and built by Bell
Aerospace Canada Division of
Textron Canada Ltd., Grand
Bend, the craft involved in the
project was Voyageur 001,
which was built in late 1971.
and has logged More than 200
operating hours. o
A second craft, Voyageur
002, .was purchased by the,
Canadian Ministry of Tran-
sport and is being operated on
Lake Ontario by the Northern
Transportation Co, Ltd., Ot-
tawa, Ontario. -
In U.S. Army!U.S.Navy exer-
cises known as OSDOC II (Off-
shore Discharge of Container
Ships), Voyageur hauled stan-
:dard 20 -by 8- by 8- foot con-,
tainers and cargo in high speed
logistics operations. The exer-
cises took place at Fort Story,
Virginia, near Norfolk.
Proven was the amphibious
craft's. capability, to haul coni
tairiers at up to 50 knots from
ship to shore and to -penetrate
inland. Present Army landing'
craft and wheeled amphibians
'have an overwater speed of six
to eight knots. Voyageur
showed these potentials;
-- It avoids cargo pile-ups on
the beach required by landing
craft -to -truck . transportation
mode changes, The Voyageur
can retain, its cargo from the
ship and carry it inland to
distribution points.
-- The high speed of
Voyageur allows wider disper-
sion of supply ships, a necessity
in the event of`threat of nuclear`
attack.
44. Ela:t,•deek,:esofigurati of .=
the Voyageur makes it par-
ticularly suitable for hauling
cargo containers, which are
being used in increasing num-
bers by the Army as it moder-
nizes its logistics systems. Con-
tainers have been found td be
far more efficient than
traditional break -bulk ship-
ping, yet many of the Army's
fending craft and wheeled am-
phibians are unsuited to con-
tainer hauling.
Voyageur's high speed.
reduces the exposure of cargo
to hostile action, and offers
rapid discharge and tur-
naround of container ships.
— The low surface contact
pressure of 2 to 3 pounds per
square inch minimizes
vulnerability to mine warfare.
