Robert G. Shrier, Esq.,
President & Publisher,
The Signal -Star,
West Street,
Goderich, Ont.
Dear R.G.
, May 'congratulate you and
your .the. pa rticuiarl
newsy, attractive Oct. 26 issue of
The Signal -Star. It is quite ob-
vious that the weekly newspaper
awards won. by The Signal -Star.
last , summer are serving as an
• added incentive to you and your
staff to publish an even better
paper, week by week, month by
month, and year by year. You
might ,be well advised to include
your Oct. 26 issue as part of
your entry for the 1972. award
contest.
May I comment on 'some of
the many items which most in-
terested me, not necessarily in
order of importance or of in-
terest.
I found myself in quite
general agreement with the
comments made by most Signal -
Star readers, in the summary
written by Shirley J. Keller of
your 1972 Readership Survey. I'
would doubt whether any other
-Ontario or Canadian weekly
newspaper uses nearly as many
pictures as The Signal -Star
does. Most of the pictures. 'are
well produced, technically
speaking, and, of course, they
recognize the newspaper axiom,
"Names are news."
I was a bit surprised at the
two-to=one tabulation on your
recent survey favoring retention
of . the historic Huron County
•
dail:.Ifp indd; '[t is to` tiecaine
as its main feature, a Museum
of Penology, I would feel that,.
e Huron County and/or Goderich
town authorities should make
sure of securing in advance not
merely relevant exhibits but
sizable grants from both the On-
tario and the federal govern-
ments toward the necessary con--
version
on--version and subsequent annual
maintenance of such.a museum.
The governments mentioned
would have before them, of
course, the spectacular success
of' the kjluron County Pioneer,
Museum in recent years.
That was indeed a fine, prac-
tical gesture by Ian M. Leslie,
architect of London, England,
starti4fund with a 20 British
pound contribution for preser-
vation of Huron County Jail as
an- historic edifice. I was im-
pressed by Mr. Leslie's under-
* statement -"Since cash
sometimes speaks as softly as
words, I enclose a cheque for
$50."
The Goderich Lions Club, I
believe, richly merited the exten-
ded coverage of its 50th anniver-
sary. The Lions Club has
established an enviable
reputation for its fine, varied
community welfare •projects in
pastm.yea rs__.
I noted with pleasure that the
W.M.S. of Knox Presbyterian
M Church honored itself by presen-
ting my friend, 'Mrs. L.H.
Diggon, with a life membership
certificate "for faithful and
generous work" in that
organization. Knox
congregation has shown a fine,
generous missionary spirit since
the days of the Rev. Donald
MacGillivray, a Huron Gqunty
boy, as a missionary in China,
back almost to the turn of the
century.
It must be gratifying to Chief
of Police Fred Minshall and to
• all concerned that Goderich
qualified for a Pedestrian Safety
Citation""for six years of fatality
free driving as far as pedestrians
are concerned."
I do enjoy those frequent
Goderich and area historical ar-
ticles, mostly turned out so in-
terestingly' by my longtime
newspaper friend, Mr. W.E.
Elliott, now nearing 90. I take
my hat off to Mr. Elliott for the
painstaking research he Carries
out for his articles; he makes
• history come alive. Should the

niskilling Dragoons have carried
Mr. Elliott's by line, or was it

That was an informative first.
article, "A Look at Huronvievi►",
by Rob Kellestin' From several
visits I have made to Huronview
inrecentyears, I feel- ;Huron
County deserves warmest
congratulations and thanks for
such -a -splendidly run residence
for elder citizens.
Interesting also was. Eileen
Palmer's story on the history of
the Maitland. Country Club,
though I was sorry `The Punch
Bowl hole has disappeared
because it was indeed a tricky
test. It may have been a
typographical error, but the
name was Walter Hagen, not
"Hagan" as it appeared. "Sir"
.Walter, as he was popularly
known, was a tremendously
colorful golf. star. I saw him
play in a Canadian Open Golf
Championship at the Rivermead
Golf Club here, many years ago
now. There. were just as great
golf stars in bygone years, as
there are today, I` feel, though
their pickings were much, much
smaller than the inflation -day
purses in effect in more recent
years, open to Jack Nicklaus,
Lee Trevino, etc, etc.
Those were timely articles
concerning Edwin Cayley Hill,
new chairman of thea Canadian
Export Association, and by
Michael Gregg on John
MacLean, even,. though I don't
think I ever,met that gentleman.
And thanks to Mr. Leslie for
his -_ .nteres.ti-ng:.-.sketel .- -ef
Viscount Goderich of Goderich
and later the Earl of Ripon. If
,the original John Robinson ever
saw Goderich, I am sure he was
proud to have the town given his
name. Mr. Leslie proved himself
an honest author by' including
reference to Viscount Goderich's
"worts", as they are called.
That was a regrettable in-
P
cident tquching the throwing Q
a fire bomb at the hgme of Mr:'
and Mrs. Larry McNeil, Cayley
Street, ,Likewise to be regretted
was the report by Bill Lutpby,
manager of the Goderich
Memorial Arena ' concerning
vandalism in' the girls''
washroom! Could -that-be-called
Teenage Women's. Lib? It is to
be hoped your editorial -"Be
Careful This Hallowe'en"- in-
spired restraint with no, un-
pleasant incidents on that
traditional jolly evening.
I feel The Signal -Star did
well by all four Huron federal
candidates in the Oct. 30 elec-
tion. All candidates, I believe,
were given extensive, objective
coverage in the news columns
throughout the protracted cam-
paign. However, that -was an un-
fortunate grammatical error in
your headline - "Who will you
send. to Ottawa on Oct. 30?"
"Whom" or "Who", I guess„ it
was pretty much a foregone con-
clusion that R.E. (Bob)
McKinley would be re-elected in .
traditional Progressive Conser-
vative Huron County.
I must confess to some puz-
zlement why the James Hayman
Construction Company has
given: the name "Waterloo Apar-
tments", 103 Waterloo Street, to
its new 36 unit apartment
building. Does the main en-
trance of the apartment building
not face on Britannia Road and
,back on Picton Street, with the
west side on Waterloo Street, as
the corner site of the former
historic Goderich Collegiate In -

so Much I believe "Goderich"
would be found engraven Qn his
now -stilled heart, as it will be
•un mine.
Thank 'you -for- according -me
the space for his rambling,
nostalgic letter.
Sincerely yours,
J. Alex Hume.
All shook up
Dear Editor,
Today is "All Souls Day" and
oh how I suffered when I read
the Goderich Signal Star
tonight, getting ready for bed at
1:00 a.m. after a busy day
meeting new faces from all sorts
of places in and around Huron
County. But I simply cannot
sleep. I got all shook up when I
read the copy "She felt like
'throwing up'."
In the three past years I have
also been doing some -research.:.
on my own. I do it uninten-
tionally ' but people have a
terrific impact upon me and
their views and opinions become
a part of rne, I carry them with
me wherever I go,
I have yet to •meet a com-
placent person. They may seem
to have a complacent expression
' but we all must, know that
sometimes the seemingly com-
placent male or female carries
great sorrows and burdens
known to them alone. I am
ignorant of many things but of
tills'- am surethe- majority- of
My last comment is by way oL. people are concerned- but many
may feel that their contribution
to world affairs or county affairs
have not too much effect upon
the destiny of this planet or this
county.
When I attended a seminar at
the ' .Goderich Psychiatric.
Hospital in the latter part of Oc-
tober I listened to represen-
tatives of every social agency in
this community, all re -assessing
their roles; each questioning
how one could contribute more
constructively, 'not scY much in
the rehabilitation of problems
concerning families and the
whole county but for ways and
means in prevention. Surely one
would not call these concerned
people contented who did not
want to see the county, change in
any way at all.
On a tour of the wards you
could read in the eyes, even of
little children, that they were
not happy with the way things
are. The staff that I met were
God's gift to Goderich in their
compassion, kindness, love and
understanding. Things sure
have changed in the mental
health field when hospitals offer
to some, more opportunities and
equipment to engage in com-
'ty creative -effort -than -is---
availa4le within the town limits
of Goderich.
What happens when the
patient leaves the hospital to
battle the perplexing problems

of his and her world alo te? Is
there a Canadian cem nunity
centre for the creative talents so
acquired. The arena is great but
it still serves the interests of a
small minority. The arena is
here and plays an important
role but not all people are 'in-
terested --solely in sport.
I. may be a little mixed up
when I look on small towns as
small cities . but the problems
are the same big and small. The
rural people living on farms
seem to be happier but not con-
tented.'
I've nevem seen such busy
people in my life. When I atten-
ded the fair in Carlow I was
amazed at the creative talent on
display. I understand the
women belonging to the In-
stitute meet to work together to
create bundles for some very
needy human beings.
Is this a sign of being happy,
with the way things are? I think
not. The happiness is their
reward for being concerned and
'wanting to brighten up the sad
world of 'others. I believe these
women are also happy when
they see others happy and
especially when they contribute
to this state of mind.,
I attended an anniversary
meeting of happy people in
Wingharn, not happy with the
way things are - but happy to
know that no problem is
hopeless.
I have . met many wonderful
people here and hope to meet
many more and my research
does not agree with that of Dr.
Hadwen:
The research findings of his
teatff');hould be of great concern
to this\community for the effects
of it will touch us, all.
You may. think you are not.
important in` the decisions that
are being made because you are
not as wordly or 'as 'wise as a
professional university team,
but if . you do not voice an
opinion or express a thought -
h
you will be governed - like it or
not.
The county is beautiful and
should not be.destroyed by over-
zealous industrialists but Jet us
face reality when a minority
who live within that county live
with such, insurmountable
problems -_ that prolessione-1
social workers need more help
and more money.
Maybe there is something
each of us can do to emulate the
staff of the.Goderich Psychiatric
Hospital in showing kindness,
compassion, love and . under-
standing. The so called "warts"
as referred to in the London
Free Press are people, people
who have as much right to the
scenic daily view and recreation
as do 5 percent of the cottagers.
Lakeshore development for
exercise, and recreation, winter
and summer, might give the
Goderich Signal -Star
photographers happier pictures
than were shown on the same
page as my previous letter but
what else is there for healthy
youngsters= to do except, "walk.
around in circles"?
I' came here to lead a peaceful
and serene life but along with,
the adults I have met quite a
few teenagers who expressed the
same feelings. (and we all may
be in the minority). They were
not happy with the way things
are" but "could possibly be
happy with some changes being
made."

Dear 'Editor:
When the Trudeau govern-
ment .abolished the distinctive
uniforms of the services, it also
decreed that the bugle call
Reveille, used by most services
from time immemorial and in
many lands, should be super-
seded, by one called the Rouse.
Whether or not it was within
its rights in requiring that the
