"Don't open burn if 'at all possible" is
an important message this, spring from
the ,.air quality .experts in Ontario's new
Ministry of the Environment.
Reporting in their bi-monthly newslet-
ter, Legacy, the Ministry is aiming their
message at all types of open burning,
whether of leaves, grass, fallen trees or
trash :Open fires, even small ones, create
considerable amounts of air pollution.
For example, one pound of leaves burned
in the open can release 600 times as
much pollution as a pound of coal bur-
ned in a furnace hydrocarbons,
aldehydes and organic acids. Smoke
damage, obnoxious fumes, as well as
health hazards to those with respiratory
ailments, are a few of the common effects
of open burning.
•
The Ministry cites several alternatives
to open burning. Depending upon the
nature of the materials involved; they can
be buried, composted, set out for
municipal collection or taker directly to a
local dump or sanitary landfill site. If bur-
ning,ls the only sglution, the following
guidelines have been established in or-
der to avoid causing an air pollution
problem:
1. Burn only dry materials. Don't burn
petroleum products, plastics, rubber or
anything else that will Cause excessive
smoke or fumes.
2. Keep fire at least 500 feet from an oc-
cupied dwelling.
3. Burn less .than a cubic yard. of material
at a time:
4. Stay with the fire at all times.
5. Don't burn on_.days__when. fain, -fog _ or
any other weather condition prevents the
ready dispersion of smoke.
Don't burn whera...,amo.ke will bother
your neighbours or blow across road-
ways and hamper driving visibility.
7. Check any local by-laws enforced' by
your fire orpolice department. If burning
.above Ontario's Fire Line, follow
regulations enforced by the Ministry of
Natural Resources, The Fire Line runs
east from Lake Huron across the bottom
of Georgian Bay and the top of Lake Sim-
coe down to Gananoque, then north and '.
west„ to meet the Ottawa River north of
Renfrew.
