'Enveloped in Flames.
London, Ont.. Oct. 19. -About 7.30
o'clock this morning a shocking acci-
dent happened to Mrs. Smith, of _ Lon
don West. She was engaged to do
laundry work at the residence of Wil-
liam Slater, tailor, Gore of. Richmond
and clarence streets, and proceeded to
start a fire in thekitchen stove, using
a five gallon can of coal oil in the oper
anon. The flames sprang up like a
flash, igniting the coal oil in the .can,
and a>terrific explosion followed. The
can was flattened as if a ' locomotive`
had run over, by the force of the "ex
plosion, and the showers of oil satura-
ted Mrs. Smith's clothing and set it on.
fire. She was knocked down by the
force of the explosion, and lay on the
floor for the fraction of a second it took
the flames to burst forth. She, however
er
managed to get up without assistance
and was making her way out when
Mr Slater name to her assistance: Ile
tried to beat the flames down andaway
from Mrs. Smith's.head,with his hands,
but, as that was impossible, he ran
back for some woollen material to

Luke Jeffries, grocer darted across to
help the unfortunate woman. Pulling
off his coat as he ran the one hundred
yards from his place to where the wo.
man was lying, he threw the garment
over her. fighting the flames like a
hero. Then Slater returned with
blankets, and between them they man-
aged to smother the fierce flames. The
fire was so hot that both men were
severely burned about the face and
hands, and, while' holding the blankets
down, one corner got loose and a
tongue of flames flashed up and burned
Mr. Slater's beard off. Meanwhile the
men and - boys who had gathered
around went into the shed, which was
filled with smoke from the burning oil,
and with pails of water extinguished
the fire that was rapidly gaining a
headway there. Mrs. Smith was con-
veyed to her home, and but faint hopes
are entertained other recovery. Her
legs suffered most severely, but the
body is burned all over. Not a spot of
whole skin six inches long can be found
The fire brigade wcrc called out, but
their services were not required. (Lot
