In an announcement to the
press late last week member of
parliament for Huron R.E.,
McKinley replied to what he
termed a "number of inquiries",
as to why SesameStreet will not
be carried on T.V. 'stations this
season. •
In some areas of the' country
Canadian parents have ex-
pressed disappointment and
irgitation that their children will
no longer see the ° popular
program, Sesame Street on their
local TV stations.
The CRTC sympathizes with
both patents and children. It
must, however, make it clear
that those Canadian TV
stations which have dropped
Sesame Street for 1972-73 have
done so by their own • choice.
Sesame Street will be
available on.most of the stations
in the CBC English television
network. The CBC English
television network includes 13
CBC owned and operated
stations, plus 62 rebroadcasters.
All will carry Sesame Street. It
includes 30 private affiliates. Of
these, the Commission's infor-
mation is that 13 stations and
• 90 rehroadcasters will also carry
Sesame Street. 17 private af-
filiates of the CBC have in-
dicated that they do not intend
to carry this program. These
stations have 44 rebroadcasters.
Sesame Street is available
free of charge to all TV stations
4,, affiliated to the CBC. It does
not ,cost them • anything.

stations agr.the country.
Other stations have refused.
The opinion of the Com-
mission is that stations have an
obligation under the law to
show pregramsR of • high stan-
dard. However, the Commission
does not think it can instruct a
station operator 'as to the
specific program§ he' should
telecast, neither does it think lit
should reduce the room for
Canadian programs every time
a good foreign program is
available. There is roombfpr a
large proportion of non -
Canadian programs on
Canadian, television stations.
Stations are expected to import
the best programs they' can get ,
to meet the needs and desires of
their audience. The quality of
programs should be a par-
ticularly high. priority when a
station is programming for
children.
The Commission believes that
thea present rules concerning
'Canadian programs arevery
reasonable. They are the result
of long discussions and' publie
hearings. They have been
arrived at with the full and
detailed knowledge, by the Com-
mission, of the financial
situation of all television
stations.
These rules are, as of October
1, 1972: 60% Canadian content
for the total broadcast day, from
6• a.m. to 12 midnight: 50% of
the lucrative TV hours from ' 6
P.m. to midnight.

cannot derive any additional

priyate TV stations have
dcacided to show Sesame Street.
These include many small

and Mr, and Mits. Harry Cham-
bers, Goderich.

Ask him! In some provinces,
liability coverage but not
collision insurance may be in-

The pick -your -own method of
harvesting has' become in=
creasingly popular. Both t'he
customer and the farmer profit
from the arrangement. For the
farmer, the problem of har-
vesting his fruit k solved and
the customer' is able ,to get
produce as fresh as ° possible.
Many family shoppers are con-
cerned about quality: with this
method of harvesting, customers'
select their own fruit. -
. Many apple farms now have
dwarf' trees making picking
much easier. Since most of the
trees grow' only 7 or 8 feet tall,
ladders are not needed.
There is often a variety of
produce available at "Pick-.

ro l
most cases. the farmer obtains
to provide a' varied selection of
