We are set- • - ting up an intolerable -emotional strain in our personal way -of - living as well.as the part that we take t doing our part beyond ourselves. , Whether we like it or not, we have to recognize that we are living, today in a totally inter- related world. Yet too often we fail to take seriously the words of the poet John Donne who said a long time ago: "No man is an island". When we think about this, we realize that in this kind of a world, there is no longer any room ..-for... the selfish . eat,. elusiveness "'of "Doing our own thing". We, are all bound , "buItdle"-oftife' and the sooner, all classes and ages in our society learn and think of this. truth the better it is .going to be for us all. Now; all of e`this involves our .seeing and accepting a new kind • of liberty - a liberty ' that 'is based not upon pleasing our- - selves; but one that •.goes far beyond the unrestrained idea of "I'll do just what I please and forget the consequences to anyone else". This then .emphasizes riot rights alone, but , duties, not just .privileges alone, but respon- sibilities. It is within this circle that there lies the chronic illness of our society and world today. Does this not grow and continue to spread from the great. lack of ' the desire to assume our respon- sibilities? This I fear, we find in all age groups, individuals who long" to do as they please, pressure ' groups, 'selfish economic' interests, and in all' , those who want "To do their own thing". Perhaps it is time then that we begin to Listen more closely to Paul. In his dad' there was. no greater exponent and preacher of freedom.
