Anne. Morphy.
Marianne Cobb Brown, whose
story has been' written elsewhere
`• in connection with St. Stephen's
church, was the wife of George
Brown, first treasurer of
Goderich after its incorporation
as a town, and subsequently
county treasurer. He had built
for his residence the large stone
house on the Huron road which
he called Stirlings, and which
was better known in later years
as Roy Rundle's.',
Sarah was the wife of John
• Haldan, Jr., presumably sonof
• the Grammar School Principal.
(The name is.spelled without a
final .`e' in early documents.
_Lucy Bennett Rich was
married to Charles Widder .
about the . time he decided to
remain in Goderich instead of
obeying an order to report at
Canada Company headquarters
in Toronto. He was inspector of
• revenue and. inspector of licen
ses, and became Crown Lands
agent following John Clark.
William Geary, husband of
;Elizabeth . Rich, in' the 1830s
operated • stage • lines between
Goderich and London .and
Goderich and Stratford. Later
he was a contractor, and it has.
been .mentioned that he cleared
the site for the jail. Presumably
because he was well-to-do, Mrs.
Geary was excluded from her
. father's will, but a grandson,
Ghar-les Paimer Geary, was to
receive 100 pounds when 22.
William and Robert, sons,
received no bequests except. that
"if individual shares .of the
estate exceed. 500 pounds,"
William was to..hare with the
others.
Emily Anne Rich, became the
wife of George Morphy, who at
' one. 'time held a mortgage for
500 pounds on Rich's property.
Ellen Myer's husband is not
otherwise identified at this
writing. Charles Code Rich went
into the drug business on The
Square, in the block between
West and Montreal streets. He
sold out to Francis Jordan when.
the latter came to town.

and 1895. In the latter year the
town, represented by Mayor.
John Butler an&treasurer

William Bennett Rich was an
Anglican and held title to a pew
in the brick church on the
Crescent. The baptismal record
of St. George's gives the birth
of two Rich . children.

Evidently all the older children.
were born in England,
Mr. Rich, of course; was' a
Tory, and a poll book of the
1858 election for Executive
Council of Canada shows that
"William Bennett Rich, gen-
tleman, Wellesley street," gave
his oral vote for Thomas Mercer
Jones, former Canada Company
Commissioner. -
