It just seems'n a have to wait for the Labor Day celebrations to finish before we can settle down to any kind of routine. The excitement of summer ,..� a •seesns�:..tcx e hol�id tea. frenzied peak about September first, from there on weseem-to slide • in to more or less calm Waters, take a deep breath anti-- ' nd--' fa-Wan-att.; ` ..- I know that it is still pretty hectic in the homes of young families, but after a few days the kids have the teacher sized up, they've caught up with some of their pals they haven't seen all summer and they havea lot to say about the new kids in their class. The conversation is going a mile"a minute and you can.'L-get--a werd• -in 'edgewise: • The terrific fastball Tournament was certainly a highlite of Goderich holiday . • weekend. The people, who came from ' far away to spend four great days in Goderich have nothing but praise and good will for the M" whole organization. I. met people from Windsor ' who had planned this week as "the great -way tofinish off'°the summer." They enjoyed playing ball here and look forward to next years tournament. Mostly they • enjoyed the hospitality and friendliness of Goderich. They raved about our town• and the 'opping here on the one , day. Of course some of 'them missed Saturday but I was pleased to hear their good words for 'our nice town. This will be l carried back to their home towns and many more "people .,,will decide they should' spend some ,time in Goderich. f► Fall and Winter Season means one thing— Bowling gets under way and the noise and laughter convinces you they are . enjoying it. Harry Little of Little Bowl tells me they have a new group starting this year which should interest a 'great many young men -- 26 and' under. It's edited Young Adult Inter - Form Group .and starts this Saturday. They will ' bowl against Wingham, Clinton and Seaford' and it sounds like a great schedule is -drawn up for a lot of fun. With all the ladies and mens groups getting organized a lot of us don't realize there is another group that enjoy their bowline. The 'youngsters of the Queen Elizabeth School for the Mentally Retarded and the group in the Adult Training t --Centre look .forward eagerly for a�. their four lanes each week.. Bonnie Graham,' teacher at the Queen Elizabeth, tells ., me few peoplerealize how much they appreciate .. the kindness and patience of a man 'like Harry Little, Toa bad there are not more like hr<mi ` This year finds an extra_ class at the Queen Elizabeth with a nevi►, -teacher ---a t'nan- (with a si _h_o r__ ief t ro. This Friday evening (Sept. 8) Goderich Little Theatre open. their 72-73 Season with their Annual Dinner and business meeting. Business .meeting starts about 6:30 with dinner at 7:30 Wm. and you are all invited ' to attend if you are interested in this lively theatre group. Come out -and 'meet -them: . Have you noticed how Hamilton Street is perking up? When John gets his hotel built on that corner Hamilton Street will REALLY be back in business. It was once one of our busiest streets but in the last 25 years it has been sitting back — resting. Now with two more fine shops added it is ta.....g on a different. look — ANOTHER 'look. Reg :and' Shirley Huckins "Rucks" Sporting Goods and Crafts Shop has great potential. With ' such good quality merchandise you are sure to be happy , with your • purchases: Another thing — if they haven't got it on land they can get it for. you — in a hurry. This is just great — these two nice people coming back to their home town, so be sure to check with them for your fishing, hunting, hockey or whatever you need --material and spend a few pleasant minutes with , them. Another nice little shop is "The Green Door" — no, it is not a Little Theatre Green Door but a bright little store with some lovely gift and "nostalgia items in it. You ' will find some precious old glass - at very reasonable prices — and some_ new gift items ' but mostly' I was intrigued by the quality of the antique and near antique things that Kay Prevett has been collecting. So often people . who have "everything" appreciatep ,this type of gift as it always has a "Memory" with it. I had one or two ask me if that was Walt son with him at the ball game the. last ,three or four days. No, it was 'Ernie, my niece Marion's husband, who resembles Walt with his big smile, big tummy and bald head — but a big resemblance eh? Just -grabbed another one from the heap. Holy smokes, it's dated •Feb. 1971. 'Phomas A. Smith, Rouleau, Sask. He noticed a reference in -the column to Calumet Island, in the Ottawa River, where my mother was horn. • He was born there' too and' remembered Smileys in Shawv,ille, Que., where, my dad. once. ran_ a . store, It's a; long, interesting letter from a real old-timer who went west at the age of 17, went overseas in World War 1. Mr. Smith, I hope you are well, though you must be 80, and 1'11 write 'a proper letter. Here's another, from White Plains, New York. Holy Old Hughie! Dated June 24th, 1969. It's from A. Leslie Hill, Captain Army Nurse Corps, U.S. Army Reserve (retired). Born • 'in Fergus, graduate of Kingston (Ont.) Here' s a self- atd:d'resse,d envelope from Mrs. Walter E. Dorsett, Smiley, Sask. But 1 .can't' find the letter. And: another one from, Gordon Fairgrieve, publisher of , the Observer Har-tland,N.B. He has a subscriber called Bill Smiley, who lives in Massachusetts. and asks that I drop him a' line. I will, Hill and Gordon. A ►Dote from G.R. And it turns out the lady lived next door for eight years to the lady who wrote me a beautiful letter .From New Zealand. In a column this summer, . I . compared my wife to that bird, the flicker. One is from a teenager, unsigned, blasting me in no uncertain terms. The other is from a senior citizen,' Mrs. Jessie Slater of Bracebridge. One pungent comment: "You must be a • Dagwood at home, and a rotten father. How else, could you have such a mixed-up family?" Well, Mrs. Slater, my mixed-up daughter. happens t he living in Bracebridge right now, and I've a good notion 'to call and tell her to go over and give you a good punch in the nose. I'M kidding, Mrs. Slater. Kim wouldn't step on an ant, 'if she could avoid it. She's a delighttul, compassionate,' beautiful and intelligent young, woman,. who is no more mixed- up than you or I. Alex McFedries, Clerk. The regular monthly meeting of the Huronview Ladies' Auxiliarywas held , on August 2lst in the Craft Room . at Huronview with -the President Mrs.' Wilfred Colc'lough presiding. Representatives were present from Auburn, Blyth, Clinton, Hensall, Hurondale and Londesbpro. The meeting opened with the members repeating The Lord's Praye. in unison. The `Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved, the Treasurer's report was given and Mrs. McGregor reported on purchases and ' sales for the Craft Room. • Mrs. Colclough reported that .84 Huronview " folk had visited Bob Elliott's farm at Pine Lake for a picnic and all had enjoyed the outing. The following week Huron 1 - view were hosts to a bus load of folk from Stratford. The Auxiliary Ladies helped serve the refreshments. Two additional trays have been purchased for use in the Craft .Room Kitchen: Mrs. Colclough reported that Mx. Archibald had several projects in mind for the benefit of the folk at Huronview and he.' would need the assistance of the Auxiliary to put them into ef- fect, he ' will have full details ready for the September meeting pf the Auxiliary." ' Mrs. Davies and Mrs. Haines of Auburn entertained the mem- bers, Mrs. Davies 'read, a poem and Mrs. Haines conducted a contest. Mrs. Colclough was the winner of the contest.
