Molar sealants
f
A team at the University of
Western -Ontario ,believes that
teeth treated with a thin .plastic
film, officially called a pit and
. fissure sealant, will
substantially prevent tooth
decay on grinding surfaces of
back teeth. "
Five hundred school children
in grades -1 and 2 aged six and
seven, are being used as ;guinea
-pigs -in a project:to---studh,f--tbe .
decay preventive qualities of the
sealant. Every child in the
project, accoi•ding to Dr. Ronald
Jordan the professor and•
researcher in charge of assessing
the results of the project, has
two matching teeth -' one upper
,molar and one lower - treated
with the film. Two similar teeth
on the other side of the mouth
• are not treated. The researchers
will thus be able to compare the
treatment needs of the sealed
teeth with those which have not
been treated.
The sealant is applied after
the tooth is cleaned with pumice
and then treated with a special
etching solution, which makes
the surface layer of the tooth
more porous so the sealant cart
have something to adhere to.
The sealant penetratea not only
the 'porosities but the natural
pits and fissures in the tooth
itself, preventing food from
gathering in the crevices.
At the end of the three year

successful the sealant is in
preventing toothdecay from
occurring,
