The Russians outplayed the.
Canadians in every fat:et of the
game; from back+ hocking• to
passing, and ,shooting to puck
control. Most important of
the Russians were superior in'
team play. The Canadians
played,as a group, of individuals
and possibly too much was ex-
pected of'them to form a closely -
knit unit in, just three weeks. ,On
the other hand the Russians.
have played together fear years.
Canada got off to a fast start
as Esposito tapped one behind
Soviet goaltender Vladislav
Tretiak at the :30 mark. Paul'
Henderson followed with a goal
,four minutes later -as lie took a
pass from Ron Ellis and Bobby
--Clarke ' and drove a low, hard
shot to • the far corner. Even
though Canada was ahead 2-0,
they weren't deserving ofthe
lead. The Russians, a little ner-
vous in this first encounter,
made too many passes at times
and ruined good scoring oppor-
tunities. Ken Dryden was called
upon to make no fewer than
three key saves in the Canadian
nets.
When Eugeny Zemin scored
for the Russians at 12:30 of ,the
period, the Russians really
caught fire. They killed two, sic-

The Russian puck control was
again the story of this period.
The Canadians,simply were not
playing together. The highly -
touted New York line of Gilbert-
Hadfield-Ratelle looked as if
they were ,still out on the golf
course.Mickey Redmond and
Red Berenson did not appear to
know what end they were at-
tacking at time. •
When the team skated out to
-start the third period, the fans
gave the Canadian team a stan-

them on. The pace was sizzling
as both teams had scoring op-

. Team Canada • defeated
Russia 4-1 in a game which was
a .complete reversal from ,Game
1; The emotional feeling and
tension of this match were just
unbelievable. As Phil. Esposito
so aptly described "the game,
"It's greater than winning the
Stanley Cup!"
Both Espositos were named
. as the outstanding Canadians •
and Vladislav Tretiak was
•selected as the outstanding
Russian. The Mahovlich boys
deserved most honourable men-
tion. Both skated their. -hearts
out (as did the entire Canadian
team) and both scored picture
! goa ls,
• The story of this game was ,
checking and • the Canadians.
were superior in all fades of
checking: bac.kchecking.
forecheckihg and bodychecking.
The highly oiled Russian
machine broke down several
times as passes were off -target
and rushed. -
Tony Esposito was the -key •
figure in the first period as hp
kept the Russians at bay 'with
several excellent saves. The
Canadians had to weather two
penalties.. one to Park for cross-
checking. the other to .Hender-
son for tripping. The. refereeing
was unbelievably poor as,
elbowing. boarding and holding
infractions (on the part, of both
teams) .were not called. Peter"
and Frank Mahovlich. Bobby
Clarke .and Ron Ellis did an ex-,
cellent job killing, penalties. ,
The Canadians• br„oke the ice,
with a goal at :14,;ef the second -
period as: Phil Espito took a
Wayne Cashman 'pass and
cleanly beat goaltender Tretiak.
Cashman had persinally
deposited two Russians into the
boards and had a bear -hug on •
another when Esposito scored..,
Cashman was the enforcer en •
the Canadian -team and kept
several Russian heads low with
--his elbows and stick. Along with
Stan •Mikita, he provided the
much-needed leadership for the
Canadian squad. • • .
Soviet tempers reached a
height when Kharlaniov
knocked the referee down and
was given a 10 minute mi c•on-
duct. just before the period en=
ded, Both goalies were stan-
douts as • they thwarted
numerous scoring, attempts. •
Peter `Mahovlich ,was ex-
cellent in his role as penalty -
killer again in this period. The
Canadian defellle
magnificent.,: Serge "`Savard, Pat
Stapleton . and Bill White.µ
Nla) ing their first game against
the"Flusiiirns, fit in perferilYn:
they brought the puck out of
their own end with short. crisp
lasses and good skating. The
Canadians came on streing, and
enutshot the Russians 16-5 in the .
period. -
When the third period began.
the tension was• just unbearable.
The teams carne tint flying and
