In approval was received from the an editorial the Mount Fot'est. Federal Government Confederate, while discussing Opportunities for • Youth the fact that :an U.F.Y.. project Prograria centre that an from their community was a licaiion '.or" 12 -Goderith-turned -clown,-noted.. ,that; ..their pl? young people, who called themselves- "Folks'', . for ° a .program : of entertainment to various institutions such as nursing homes and Psychiatric Hospitals., The travelling show • was ranted a total of $8668. The money would over wages of $60 per week to the students • involved and cover expenses incurred by travelling between various points on their -tour. June 17 the show went on. the road, last Friday it officially folded after a very successful summer. Between the time approval for the project was received in April and the time it actually became a reality the group put together a show consistin& of two parts, drama and music,,, arranged for equipment and bus rentals and layed out an itinerary of concerts. June, 14 saw the first public appearance of the "Folks" show. That evening, the group performed at the Goderich,,, Psychiatric Hospital, in a sort of prelude to their summer on the road,_ and at the same time set the scene far - their future success. The show came off with hardly a hitch and, better 'still,' left those watching it yelling for more. From that point onward "Folks" steadily improved, learning more about how to entertain their 'rather specific audiences. At one point a drama production was scrapped and replaced ,by another. • O"ccasionally certain musical numbers didn't seem to be getting the complete reaction and they were replaced. The result was an ever improving show as is indicated throughe various press accounts clipped by the group and the letters of thanks from grateful nursing home operators. Lynda Dawson of, -the Craighome Nursing Home Ailsa Craig said, "A" note of .thanks to your group for coming and entertaining our resid ts. They really, enjoyed the es and particularly the older songs. We are very glad you included our home in your tour, Russel and Shirley Wilhelm, operators of a nursing home in Exeter noted, "We wish to thank you one end-all for coming to our home to entertain. We greatly appreciated it. The patients have been wondering if you' are coming back to entertain -again. Gladys Bother, writing on behalf of Sunnyside Haven Nursing- . Home at Strathroy said, "The patients really enjoyed it and were telling their people what a nice program you gave us. They also say how polite and nice you were to all of them. You have- no idea -what it meant to our residents." John and Grace Bakker, Goderich Nursing home operators said simply, "People like you make the world a nicer place to live in." These are just a few samples of the reaction the "Folks" program drew everywhere they played." In, only one incident was Mrs:W;A.
