It 'was quite a surprise I can tell you. I enjoyed the Morley Leeking Jr, guest editorial — "Mans Best Friend?" •-- he has a great sense of humour to go along with his scars. "If bitten by a dog — be sure to get his licence number -- and don't bite back " Why is it that some mailmen don't even try to get acquainted with the dogs on their route. It might take up their whole "day off' but I should think it would be worthwhile getting a wag instead of a snarl. I can even see where it might mean two special trips — one in civvies and one in uniform — both with the dogs owner present , to control the fellow and a box of dog goodies to let him• know you really want to be friends. It would also mean writing the dogs name down beside the owners name on his route list and remembering it. L know some mailmen who are so frightened they carry mace to squirt into the dogs eyes thus assuring an ,enemy for life. . The. -.dogs owner will- also hate him since ' the dog starts growling and barking while the mailman is still a couple of . ',blocks away. So, it is just a wish I don't ' like to see dogs and mailmen angry at each other. Back to school — and I Bear a. big sigh of relief from every col fer of the town. Most of the chil'drerrare anxious to 'go back — belie 'Ye it or notand I can understand — since . their summer has been fouled up so often ' with the poor , weather conditions — It has surely been LOUSY! Now — just WISH — real hard for sunny days. This weekend — our last BIG one — will find me staying in Goderich safe and sound — I hope. There's no way I'll get into the rip and. tear of Labor Day traffic. There are many activities planned, the biggest being the Fast Ball Tournament held in Agriculture Park starting Friday nite ending late Monday. This popular-•' tourney has grown quickly from its sudden start. four years ago. Mid -August arida pair of'non players were doing a lot of 'worrying for the local teams. Sandy Profit and Billy Kirkey were grumbling about the .state. of the economy, when our energetic little Kitty Smith pipes up with, "Why don't you run a ball tournament on Labor Day to raise some fund's?" "With two• weeks to go — are you kidding?." was the quick . reply. She wasn't kidding,. and insisted if everyone pulled their weightthey could round up enough teams• to make it interesting. DRMCO team was going out of town — could THEY talk it up? Talk it .up they did, and ten teams including the locals managed to play on Sunday afternoon and all day Monday for some great games. The ,next year 10 more teams, last ,year they wereclamoring ,for a spot and as' you can see from the schedule — some where in this •weeks paper — they ' come from. miles away pinning the competition down to the best. This year with 26 teams they had to ease out the exhibition gyne - planned- --for n-the—gir-is' teams. There just wasn't any more time. So, our Kitty gave them the kick in the pants they needed to get going and ' now hundreds enjoy their excellent ball games. I'd much rather watch these fellows than all the experts on T.V. THEY bore me! With the ' tournaments held in Goderich something wonderful is happening that few people would 'notice — there are More youngsters playing ball — in this area than there has been in a great many years. So, we were once the "Hockey Town" — perhaps we will build up a reputation of fine. ball .player$.' There are many colorful teams -- outside.of our own boys (who are just GREAT — believe me) who. create a lot of interest. One of these are the ''Morden House Indians from Sarnia.'Most of the team ARE Indian, they tell ,me, and Ernie Plain is very proud of his team. They are one of the first' teams to hit town and stay to the very last minute. These teams require a lot of A AiiiLo'aders says:.. d yet todoc'•• ra.nto Dear Ann Landers; Yesterday, I ,discovered two pairs of panty- hose and a lace bra rolled up in a ball and stuffed into my 18- .year-old ,fan's gym shoes. 4 wondered which of . his.-.. girl friends had been stupid enough to' leave these things behind. There is some . disagreement between ,. psychiatrists as -to whether or not the majority of transvestites. are also active homosexuals. Some say yes --others say no. Dear Ann Landers:- You're probably sick to death of complaints from people who didn't receive a thank -you note space and I wonder if 'people realize how much. `For 'example.
