legion tykes lose out

The Goderich Legion Tykes
and Kinsmen Midgets were both
eliminated last week in the
WOAA finals. The Tykes were
defeated 10-5 in the third and
deciding game , , last' Tuesday
(August 22) .by' Walkerton' in
Walkerton.
'Walkerton scored six runs in
the second inning to put the
game out of reach. They scored
single runs in the first and sixth
innings and added two in the
fourth.
Walkerton 'pitcher Critchfield
held Goderich hitless for the
first three innings and ended up
with a three -hitter.
Jim Costello had a perfect
day. He had two singles�'and two,
walks. Dan Maillett bad the
other Goderich hit. Goderich
scored three times in the' fifth
and once . in the sixth and
'seventh.
Kincardine romped over
Goderich id the WOAA final
last Friday in Goderich to win
the series two games to one with
one game tied. Kincardine
smashed four homeruns, in the
game. .

The Goderich Minor Soccer
Association has organized a
specie exhibition soccer game
held September 9 at
Agriculture Park.'

Hospital and the local Pee Wee
and Bantam All''Stars,

members from the hospital will
open with a game against the
Pee Wees at 2:00 p.m. At 3:00

describe the next few weeks at
the club are very, very, active!
As you have no doubt noticed,
.as we prepare to flip over
August on the calender, the
dark green of the Maples has
given ,,way to a touch of brown
and gold; perhaps not enough to
be' too concerned taut never the
less a gentle reminder that we
are entering 'the final month of
the regular season.
Accordingly, we look, forward
to' several Tournaments
including the Indian Summer
Tournament,' • Wednesday

Championship First Qua,lifying,
Round ' to be completed by

District C of the Royal
Canadian Legion held its
annual 'golf tournament on
Sunday, August 27 at
.• , Whispering Hills Course in
Hanover.
Thirty-two teams had
qualified through -'Zone,
competition to participate. The
top six teams of this District
contest were to qualify to
participate ',in the Proyincial
finals.
Branch 109 Goderich was,
successful and was fifth in the
overall standings. Tean'i
--members- were Harold
Vic Powell; Lloyd Sdhoenhals
and. George Low..
The .Provincial tournament
will be held at Union Course, St.
Thomas, on September 30.
Harold Walls also won . an
individual'° award for his gross

scene for the World Championship Chess Series. The •
Russians have accused challenger Bobby Fischer of the
U.S. with using mechanical devices and foreign
chemicals to break the ' concentration of defending
champion, Boris Spassky of Russia. Nyet! Nyet! Nyet!
(translated naughty! naughty! naughty! comrades -
why must we be poor sports about losing The
championship.. •to an egocentric American who
philosophizes that "chess is life,"? Perhaps your
Russian .hockey -team can defeat the Canadian All-
Stars...once. While 1 was in Rekjavik, Bobby (Fischer)
asked to see me 'but I ,told him i was returning to an
'important softball series...did any of you see the
perfect throw this reporter made to second -base last
Thursday' in .the semi-finals of the Industrial .League? •
The only trouble was that nobody was on second base
so it ended up bouncing against the fence in center
field! After' the game which Sandy's lost to DRMCO,
one observer remarked that no one would be getting a
haircut at Mr. Sandy Profit's Barber Shop on Friday.

the Toronto Argonauts has'•beenoffered a job selling
programs at the C.N.E. -- he'd better take it...rumor
also has it that Bill Kirkey, manager of Sandy's
Clippers is .making an emergency return trip to
Goderich from Calgary in order to chat°ge up the
slumping Clippers...This reporter is a little disturbed at
the amount of publicity that relief pitcher,Sparky.Lyle
of the N.Y. Yankees is receiving while a pitcher who,
in my opinion, is equal to Lyle dries not get any notice.
I'm speaking of Mike Marshall, relief ane of the
Montreal Expos whose statistics bear me out on this.
Marshall is one of (if not the best) the superior bullpen
artists. in the major leagues. As of Aug. 25th, he had
-won 13 'games and lost only 3 with, an E.R.A. well ,
below. 2.00 along with X15 saves. NEWSWEEK, TIME
and SPORTS'' ILLUSTRATED have devoted far too
much ink to Mr. Lyle and have grossly neglected one,
Mike Marshall,..As pre -season football draws to a close
in the NFL, the, amount of serious injuries sustained in,
these games makes one wonder how necessary they
are. Last year, such noted stars as Joe Narnath and
Gale Sayers were . immobilized in pre -season games
and this year Roger (the dodger) Staubach and Randy
Johnson are two prominent casualties of the pre-
season wars. In a particularly horrendous incident, a
halfback for the Oakland Raiders suffered a broken
neck in a game 'televised nationally by NBC. -Tho
exhibition games should ,be iltilizek' more for the
coacjie's to evaluate aspiring rookies rather than
estobjished stars...Clarence Campbell was seen in the
Kremlin last weekend, Many Canadian hockey fans
wish he would stay there, One correspondent wired
that Campbell was seeking political asylum - but
Russia wouldn't grant it...Five foot six, one hundred
and seventy pound quarterback Fran Tarkenton of the
Minnesota Vik'n"c was running around the end in a
recent exhibitiol.- me with the Baltimore Colts when
-a gigantic, powerful hand (that was as 'big :as `'Fran)
appeared from the pile-up on the scrimmage line and
tightly clasped Francis around the neck. Before
