CASSAGES FOR WINTER MARKET.
now These Are Stored. by Long Island's
Progressive Truck Tremors.
The gardeners of Long Island have
made a specialty of cabbages, and gun
deeds of tons are shipped to New York,
Brooklyn and other places all through
the winter. These cabbages are grown by
progressive methods on soil well adapt-
ed to their culture. Then their meth-
ods of storing cabbages to keep them
fresh all through the winter are worth
considering, for probably they send as
fresh looldng cabbages to market in the
middle of winter as they do in Novem-
ber. It is described as follows in The
American Cultivator:
"Late in the fall, before the garden is
hard frozen, the location that is well
drained should be selected, and in the
land thus marked out the cabbages are
stored, Sometimes the storage pit is
made carefully and used only for this
purpose every season. If naturally
drained, artificial methods are employed
to keep the water from collecting in the
soil. This is a very important point, for
nothing causes cabbages to rot quicker
than damp, wet soil.
"Furrows are then thrown open with
a deep plow, although on a small scale
the spade is sometimes used for this
work. Make the furrows deep and
scoop out the loose earth in the middle.
The oabbages aro placed in the furrows
with the head down, although this is
contrary: to methods of many farmers in
other parts of the country, who place
the roots downward. The stems are
placed at an angle of 45 degrees, which
almost brings the cabbages on their sides
instead of directly perpendicular. The
leaves are kept close to the heads, and
then the earth is packedclosely around
them. The plow and spade can be used
for packing the earth around and over
the cabbages.
"Beware of too deep covering, for.
this is worse than too shallow. Two fur-
rows with the plow are considered suf-
ficient. These largo gardeners never
use straw or leaves on the cabbage for
protection. They consider dirt sufficient,
and surely their results are enough to
prove the wisdom of their simple meth-
ods. Generally for the winter store
cabbages that are not fully ripe are
selected, as they keep better, and ,the
dead ripe ones aro marketed. at once. In
this way fresh cabbages aro had the year
round, and as the market demands them
they are dug up for use."
Prevention of Swarming.
The query is often asked, "What
causes bees to swarm?" Miss Atchley,
in Tho Live Stock Journal, answers as
follows:
"It is an alsnridance of sealed brood
that causes them to swarm, as I never
knew a natural; swarm to. issue Without.
an abundance of sealed brood, both
drones and workers. But sometimes
they may swarm without drone brood at
all. . Still they are likely to have sealed
drone brood at the time the swarm is-
sues. Whoever knew a natural swarm
to issue without plenty of sealed brood?
Even if they have a full hive of unsealed
brood they show no swarming- sign.
When our bees are on a swarming ram-
page, I always find the hive solid full of
sealed brood. In short, bees nearly al-
ways have sealed brood, sealed drones
and sealed queen cells. Then look out.
"If you wish to keep your bees front
swarming, keep their sealed brood taken
away until they become so weakened
that they are willing to give it up, and
I will bet you a nickel you can control
swarming. Use the brood in strength-
ening weak colonies, or 'build up good,
strong colonies with the sealed brood,
and give them a case of sections and a
queen cell or a young laying queen that
is not bent on :swarming, and you have
got 'em..:I should like to strike that
apiary with a swarming fever . that I
could not control. Try my plan and
see."
Improving Grass Land.
There are several ways in which worn-
out grass -lands may be restored to pro-
ductiveness at various degrees of ex-
pense. The most efficient, perhaps, says
The Country Gentleman, is to plow the
field, pulverize the sod and add manure
and such a quantity of ashes as may
have been found beneficial or may be
had. Other crops may be introduced.
One of the best, without plowing., is to
scratch the surface thoroughly and pul-
verize it with a slightly sloping tooth
harrow with sharp teeth, reseed and roll,
with a fine top dressing of such ferti-
lizers as have proved valuable on other "I
crops. Simply top dressing with com-
mon barn manure with a Kemp spreader
will be useful, the value varying with
the amount applied and with its free-
dom from lumps. Scarifying alone with
the sharp tooth harrow, or with added
seeding if required, may prove beneficial.
In connection with this treatment a top
dressing with the adjacent soil will in
some instances greatly add to the prod -
not, Much, however, will depend on
the character of the land in all these
applications.
A Cheap Icehouse.
1-Ii.gh cost is not essential to the con-
struction of an icehouse. The essentials
are ground from which the water will run
away, sides stiff and tight enough to se
surely hold the fine packing with which it
mita be stlrreeilyded, a roof good enough
to turn rain and free ventilation over the
top of the material with which the ice is
covered, .Any shed that will furnish
these requisites and 18 inches of chaff,
sawdust, fine charcoal, cut corn, fodder
or straw p hard and tight under,
packed . on
all sides and above the ice, with both ga-
ole ends wide o1.)071, will keep the ice bet-
ter than a 050 stone building, says one
who claims to have tried it, in the Phila-
delphia Fenn Journal. A. pile of ice 8 by
10 feet .i,nd 0 feet high will, according to
the same authority, hold enough for an
ordinary farts faini.ly.
