The Goderich Girl Guides and Brownies held their annual fund raising event of the year despite
overcast skies and a continuous downpour of -rain. Here some of the Brownies set out to make their
rounds. The girls are, left to right, Linda Knox, Rita Lassal ine and Janet Lassal ine. Mrs. Anne Knox,
back, the Brownie' leader directs the youngsters. Anyone who did not have a opportunity to support the
movement and would like to purchase a box of the cook les will have a chance to do so this weekend when
the girls will be outhin an attempt to sell their surplus cookies.—staff photo

Hosts inter -club :banquet
On the evening of Wednesca.y,
May 3 over a hundred members of
the*Lions, Kinsmen, Rotary, and
4egion Br,. 109 assembled in the
Green Room of the Legion Halt for
the annual interclub banquet. ,
Following a dinner of roast beef
served by the Ladies'. Auxiliary,
the chairman of the meeting,
president G. Low of ,Branch' 109
introduced the head table which
included F. Skeleton of the K-40
Club; H. Murphy, president of'the
Lions; Rev. R. Raymont, NorthSt.
United Church; D. Rentz,
president of the Kinsmen, H.
Chambers, past president of
Branch 109; T.•Orinand},
president of the Rotary; and Oe
guest speaker, Major, the
R.ever•enfl•'G. Youmatoff, former
R.C.A.F. Pad't•e, CFB Base,
Clinton.
The president of each „club
introduced the ,members of his
club and the -chairman .of the._
meeting recognized the presence
of Lion Arnold McConnell, the
originator of the -Inter-club
dinner, which now celebrates
20th anniversary.
The speaker .in his opening
remarks congratulated the clubs
whose., various projects serve
every age group in the
community. The Rev. Youmatoff
went on to trace the problems .of
the Russian immigrant family of
which he was a youthful member,
taking up rsidence in Canada."
The speaker said that they
accepted thest problems as a
small price to pay for an
opportunity to live ina land where
personal freedom is fully
•i•ecognizeci. -Following over 30
years of travelling the -wortd with
• the xnilitaryT having seen the
mountains of Switzerland, the
•-,....v r1( of - South Africa • and the
forests and lakes of Northern
Europe, it was the speaker's view
that none of these could be
surpassed by the Rockies, the
Prairies and, the forests�r of
-Nw thern Canada. The seasonal
changes of Canada are ouch
preferred to the lands of
perpetual sbminera-as in Africa,
• stated the speaker. -
The Rev. Youmatoff stressed
that he felt sorry for the native-
born Canadian, fcfr, unlike the
immigrant from less fortunate
lands the native-born .Canadian
-.can never truly appreciate the
freedoms of speach, assembly,
movement, which we so casnal•1V
take for granted in this wonderful
land called Canada.
The speaker was thanked by
Past Zone Commander E. C.
Johnstone for his inspiring lesson
in citizenship.
