a news event
Next time somebody in the club
or other organization you belong
to asks ' if you'd handle the
publicity for some event that's
corning up, take my advice" and
respond with a ringing ''NO". ,
Ito That's the way they always put
it: "Handle the publicity."
Casual. Nothing to it. You just
"HANDLE" IT.
Well, I'm sitting here in my
underwear 'trying to write , a
column, because I've just finished
Ijt a two-week stint of ''handling" the
publicity and I'm soaking wet
from the waist up.
Why'? Because I'm just home
after galloping up and ,down the
main street begging merchants to
put posters in their windows.
I should have known better. I got
mybaptisnl quite a few years ago
when I took on,t.he publicity chores
for an election campaign. And I've
been involved in three elections
since, each time emerging in the
same condition: wringing wet and
swearing "never again.
But the first one was the worst
one. I was a lot younger or I'd
probably not have come through it
without cracking up:
My candidatewas young, had
never run before,' aid was up
against a man who belonged to the
large majority. The latter should
have been a shoo-in. But we licked
him.
We formed a'triumvirate-. Ross
Whicher, the candidate. 'Geordie
Hough, campaign manager, and
myself, publicity manager.
Ross heat the back roads and
wore out three pairs of shoes.
Geordie beat every bush in the
.,county raising,money. And I beat
my brains to "the bone writing
speeches and news .releases and
advertisements.
Hardly "anybody pays any
attention to the platforms of the
various parties, so you have to
sell the man. ,And there are only
so many, ways of saying, "Our guy
is better than their guy."
You say your guy has more
children thaniheir. guy and that
the farmer is active in church
Work. The opposition' counters by
pointing out their guy's
experience and claiming he is
•vitally interested in' crippled
children. And so on. '
You challenge -your opponent. in
an ad, to a public debate. He gets
free publicity by refusing on the.
grounds that there is no evidence
your guy has anything worth
,listening toin public. Ana so on.
Then there are the
advertisements. , We had ten
weeklies Ad a daily paper
involved, plus two radio stations-.
And we never had enough money.
,So, every ad had to be,small but
packed with power. . Try this
sometime.. Try getting across a
vital message in a 'thirty-second.
commercial.
Oh well, it was Sort of fun 'at the
time, and I learned that a man an
• wor'k,1-8 hours a day and ems

I recall, the only material reward
was a c'rock of Crown Royal. Not
'"~v.•—x i Ccttse—tfi'e"- candidate was a
>i •cheapskate, but because fie was up
° to his ears in hills, .after the
election. •
• As 1 said, I should hove known
better at my age. than to "handle
– the publicity" again.'But when I
was asked, I responded like an old
war horse who has been'. through
the reek and blood of battle, but
can't resist .it.
. It was such a little thing. really.
Just the publicity . for an "Open
House at otir school, to mark the
completion of a new wing, built to
the tune of three -million. Nothing

to it. A no -profit event. Just let the
papers know...etc.
Next thing I know, I'm writing
ads, churning out thousands of
words of copy, trying to con radio
and television stations into
believing• that the "news item" T
am phoning in isnot paid
advertising, composing a letter
for 1300 kids to tape home to their
' parents, writing letters of
inyitation to various dignitaries,
arranging printing of posters, and
finally - distributing these"' in
persona.
•Ht never, I've managed to
totter through once again., The
only thing that bojhers me is that I
enlisted one of my young
assistants in the English
department Anto writing radio
commercials,.andI'm afraid he's
hooked. He's `been battling out
thirty-second commercials with
not only elan but gusto. I wouldn't
be surprised if he quit teaching
English and went into advertising,
a fate worse than depth.
There's one other unfortunate
side effect. My wife and daughter
have a wedding corning up, The
former is flying in ever -
decreasing circles of panic and
accuses me of having deserted
her during the crisis, because
I've spent so much time -you
guessed it—"handling the
publicity."
• Fortunately, Kim is blithely
unconcerned about the whole
thing. She constantly remarks,
"Stop worrying,. Mom. There's
nothing to it", which has the effect
of turning the Old Battleaxe a deep
shade of violet, while her head
Whirls with thoughts of invitations
and announcements to be printed„
the house'to get'ready, the flowers
to be organized, and the casual
kid's wedding dress not even
thought of,with ten days to go. Not
. to mention, "When rs the ' yard
going to be cleaned up?" and "I'll
never get' that chair back from the
upholsterer's in time", and
simply, ','h can'ice it."
Like Kim, I believe the wedding
will take place, and it will
• scarecely rate in the history

activities are not restricted in any way.
Though, they have normal brotherly arguments'"sometimes
physical as well as verbal) these two are warmly attached to
each other. They have. never been separated and %ould be
deeply distressed if life took them in different directions.
The attachment between these boys. is even more important,
because, they are living in a farm foster home where they have

DEAR ANN LANPERS:J. I, hatye
given a lotgf thought to the letters
you've printed on adoption,
'probably because they have
special significance to me.
After being told we would never
have children of our own,` my.
husband and I adopted a baby boy.
He was five days old when we
picked him up at the hospital"and, I
„m,ight add, the most.beautlful baby
I had ever seen.
On Daniel's fifth birthday I sat
him down and explained that ,he
was bpoughtu. nto this world by a
different monnthy. I:told him, his
mommy didn't have a job and
couldn't clothe or feed him-, so we
'asked if we ,could take him home.
with us and love him and take care
(f•him • At the time, I didn't think it
soaked in.
Several days later we had a
guest in our home. She leaned
overto me and whispered., ,"Does,
Danny know he is adopted?" I
replied, "Why don't you ask
him?" Instead, she asked him if
he knew what adoption meant. He
• answered,' "Sure. It means when
your real mommy'ean't take gal
of you so another momnyes L
you home to -love. "
I hope this letter will make it
easier for adoptive)' parents who
are procrastinating- because they
can't find: the right words.- THE
OTHER ,MOMMY
DEAR MOMMY: Your • letter
serve's a second useful purpose. It
points out the,hazards of not
telling a child his adopted, under II
the foolish assumption that he will i e
never find out. The world is'full of
stupid, thoughtless clods (like
your guest) who would ask such a
question in' the- presence of the
adopted child. Thanks'for writing.,
DEAR ANN LANDF.RS: My son.
Bob. is 28 years olci. • He is
planning to marry a divorced
woman. Jeanette has two 'children
bva former marriage and is five
months pregnant with Bob's''chi'ld.
Jeanette wants Boh to, have a
vasectopiy before they' mar'r'y.
She says three children are
enough foranybody and. to use her
phrase. "I get pregnant when a
man winks at me."
Now Bob is having second
thoughts about the vasectomy. He
takes the -position that if Jeanette
should die suddenly and he might
want to marry again and have
more children, he'd be out of luck.
Jeanette insists that a vasectomy
is not final, that Bob couldhave a
second operation to restore
fertility if he wanted to'have more
children later.' Is this true, Ann?
Will you please check with a good
doctor and let' us know. --HIS
MOTHER
PEAR MOTHER: It is possible
'for a man who has had a
vasectomy'to regain fertility by
having anothel' operation, but he
should not count on •it. Dr. H. Y.
Lee, a Korean surgeon who has
done some very significant work
in this field, reports only.a 14 per
' cent success figure. A vasectomy
should be ' considered
irreversible. For those who want,
detailed information , by
recognized authorities, , I
recommend "The • Vasectomy'.
