Goderich Lions enter#ain
McNiib and area councils
At their meeting on Thursday
evening the Gociericti .Lions Club
hosted the members of Huron
County Council as well as
representatives of, Goderich
Town Council. Guest' speaker at
the event was"the-Deputy Minister '
of Transportation and
Communications A. T. C. McNab.
A very entertaining speaker
Mr. McNab spoke to the group on
the various areas on
transportation following an
introduction . to the topic by
discussing the problems of
transportation in Ontario in
general. b°
He stressed the prohlem faring
`the Transportation and
Communications department in
the field of long range Planning.
'The department finds itself
usually trying to catch up to the
situation,' he said, "making
future planning very difficult. The
problems are often developing
faster than we tcan meet them."
The deputy minister said
priorities and funds are being
placed for the most part where the
problem,,. as it relates to the
volume of traffic, warrants it
most. Comparing some of the
urban areas to Huron County he
pointed out that the ' amount of
traffic there often cctlipares In
one day to the amount travelling
between Goderich and Stratford in
a week. .
Dealing with the transportation
problems faced in the city he
noted that he was against any
move to prohibit the use of cars in
the core areas of cities by
legislation. He didgsay however
that 'tie supported moves to
provide Witter and faster public
transit' in an attempt to ease
people over 'to this way of
travelling.
Priority ,lanes for buses or
other forms of public 'transport '
was; suggested and the
encouragement of car pools to
help ease 'the number of vehicles
in the downtown areas. Mr,
McNab told the group that even air
cushion vehicles • are being
studied as a possibility in
providing better public transit.
Fnllnwing, his remarks- Mr.
McNab opened the Floor, to
questions from members of the
County Council. In replying to one
query on the possibility of
building a development road to
this region,,in an attempt to draw
more industry and tourism, he
explained that the department did
not have, the funds to both keep up
withthe traffic boom in cities and
build roads to draw 'traffic
elsewhere.
He did note that The department
would do all it could to keep the
. standard of transportation in'
Western Ontario at as high a level
as possible.
With regard to train service the
deputy minister said the railways.
. could not economically operate
passenger"rail service since the
majority of people want to travel
by car and the few that were left
could not "support such service.
Mr. McNab noted that requests
