I first saw the town of Goderich
in the year of 1904. I was born and
spent all my adolescent years on a
hilly farm in East Wawan.osh.
My parents m"anaged,.to eke out
a living,for 11 cchildr•en.'Don't ask
me how'. I was No. 9"1in the flock. In
,the early 'days farmers were
- class -ed -as the • 'Cotninr01_'NOV e.
Not so now. Farming is looked
, upon as a veru' important
business.
We 'had often heard of our
County's Town of :Goderich and
•• longed to see it, so as i was a
young lad,pot• 19 I decided to' take
- my bestgirlRfor a' buggy ride to
Goderich to see the sights. .
Aftera good.deal.ofpreparation
we started out one morning along
the gravel road and got along very
well until we came 'to Dunlop
• Coiner. There v,'e'fotthrl' a -large
sign which said. -Locomotives
are, working on the Electric
Railroad. Watch your horses".
However we proceeded ,on
'to'wards the south. We did not
_.encounter any locomotives and.we
carne to a long wi4nding hill and -
dropped down into a very -unique ,
valley'with a row.,of cottages along
the foot of the hill •and a large red
people ready for the return
journey home.
So dear Mr. Editor. is it not
remarkable that as the years slip
from us and.we sit alone with our
thoughts how our minds will
wander back to the golden days of
- our youth. .
I 'have *now reached.. my' 117
birthday therefor I would ask my
'readers as they browse through
these ramblings of mire to „ se
be tolerant towards defects wnich
some. of . them will doubtless
discover and which' defects will
not lessen the pleasure of reading
of conditions that existed in our
younger days.. .
I 'believe that it Should be a
matter, of pride•and,gratifica'tion
to every loyal Canadian by birth
or adoption to reminisce of -the-
. .past. Pleasedo not think me vain •
if at this time I' pay tribute to my
parents. They were of strong
character and devoted, to their
family and although they were
always cotnparat•ively, poor and.
lived .in primitive surroundings,. I;
thinlfor the Most part we=were
very contented. Today we ` are
surrounded with all kinds of push -
.buttons and gadgets' or all; kinds
barn on the top peak also the aver
flats dotted with a herd of black
and white cows and across the
` river could be seen the' harbour
'with the large elevators and their
tops pointing towards the sky-
- line. When we came up out of the
valley we followed along by way of
• Hamilton S,t)''Where .we found a,
livery stable to leave , our, horse
and have him cared for. •
• Their we started out to'see what
the town was like. We came to the
Endless St, and wandered around
for a while until we found we were
going backwards, but all in all we
saw many fascinating sights.
Then there were two very tired
and we think we are happy, but I
say candidly is our way of life
very much better than that of the
older country ° folk.lackward
turn backward oh Time in your
flight.
Make me a child again. just -for
tonight,
Mather, come back. from that
echoless shore
Take me again to your heart
once of yore
Over my slumbers your loving
watch keeps
Rock me to sleep Mother, rock
me to sleep..

Auditor's Report
To: the Members of -Council, and Ratepayers of the
Corporation of the. Town of Goderich.
I hav•
e •examined 'the 1971 financial statements of the Corporation
of the Town of Goderich and- its local boards, which are listed on the attach-
ed Index. My examination included a general .,review ,of the accounting
procedures and sych tests of 'accounting records and other supporting 0'`.'
evidence as I considered necessary in the circumstances.
In my 'opinion these financial statements present fairly the financial
position sof theme Corporation of the Town of Goderich and its Iocol,,boards
as at'December 731 st, 1971, and the results of their operations for the
year then ended, in accordance with accounting principles generally accept-
ed , for Ontario munici f5'alities applied on 0 basis consistent with that of
the preceding year.
