Frank Smeeth's planing mill, a hundred years. at the corder of Nelson street and
Cambria road, is no mores The stout timber and brick walls have been demolished' and
refuse lumber has fed a big bonfire in the yard. Actually, there were two mills. Francis
Smeth bought the corner lot in 1871 and built a- planing mill which served the
community until it barbed, around 1901. Mr. $mee'th, who lived a•few doors west in a big
frame hoilse,den olished about 10 years ago, rebuilt at once, but in 19.03 sold the plant to
Joseph T. Goldthorpe: Be had acquired. in 1876' the next lot east,. on which ,the spacious
lumber sheds stand. Goldthorpe within a year sold the plant. to Goderich Planing Mills;
Limited, comprising ; Tames Buchanan, James .Buchanan Jr., and John Lawson.
'Evidently the Buchanans operated the mill for many years; itwas 1931 when trustees of
that•estate sold to F. C. Kalbfleisch, of Zurich: The Kalbfleisch firm used only the
lumber yard 1 nc office as an adjunct to` their main plant. Thea sheds have also been
used by Refflinghau§ ,Construction Company, Graham 11 ctric, and others. In
pecember, 197'1, F. C. Kalbfleisch'& Sons sold to 'Benson M. Grahar who has been
directing a demolition crew, An apartment building will be f,r•ected on the site, Mr.
Graham said.
