We have cobs, if we me, to see your baby;" said MO. Koh.
"Why?” said the man. " Vy;y do you want to see our baby?"
"We have heard about• him and we have come a long way - Mr.
Stephany, Mr. Shalita - and. lam Mr. Koh - weihave come a long way
to worship your b„by."
-By this time the mother had- come to the door, holding the baby
in her arms. The three strangers entered .quietly into the room, and
knelt on. the floor. They remained kneeling for several minutes, and
Joe and Mary were too suprised to speak or move. -
" Then 'Mr. Shalita stood up and took. from his pbcket a narrow •
box which he opened. From it he took a short ebony rod which had
a lion parved in gold on •the top of it. {
Holding it toward the t hild, he said:
"Take this rod as the 'symbol of your sovereignty,. for you will
reign over us all with justice and mercy. We declare this child to be
King of ®Kings, Statesman of Statesmen, the Governor of all -the
world." ,
Mr. Koh now stood up and, opening a small case, "he took out a
gold ;ting'set with a"dazzling sun=burst of diamonds. He put the ring
e child's tiny hand and said: -
"As the sun sbeds -its •ISrightness o • e world;
shitle in every, heart and, penetrate -every dark .place with. his Divine
Spirit."
Mr. Stephany also took from his pocket a small box in which lay
a miniature lily, delicately carved in white marble.
"The hope,of the world," he said, "lies with this child", for-h.e will
deliver us from the sting of death."
"You do not understand this today," Mr. Stephany continued,
speaking now to Joe and Mary. "During his life your child will have
no''use- for these -things', -He will need .nothing to r laim-his `'authority
except his own power and divine perception. But when you prepare
his body for burial,•you may invest himwiththese symbols. Put the
ring on his finger, the rod between his hands and enclose the..lily in
the palm ogf his right jiand. Now please, no gaestionsJor a while! We
shall make whatever explanations we can, but first: we `have corne a
long way. Will you make us a pot ofi'coffee?"
And for Mary and Joe the next two hours, white the strangers
visited in their home, were like a dream they would never forget.
