Gode(rich Figure Skating Club off to great ,start
The Goderich Figure Skating with t kr .f od•ench Figure
Club is off to a flying start this Skating Club before going on to
the Stratford Club.
Mr. and Mrs. Brady are
presently liv'ng in the village of
Bayfield. They are working
together with the clubs in
Goderich, Bayfield (new this
year), Seaforth', and Wingham.
Bruce also teaches in Blyth,
Walkerton and Hanover,
"..ia:• d rich , ih Bradys aie-•_
season, . partly due to the
enthusiastic executive behind
the club and partly due to the
efforts of the Club's young pros,
Mr. aj d Mrs. Bruce Brady.
The Bradys are a very
youthful' couple. Bruce is 23 and
. , his wife, -Fran, is 19. What's
more, the Bradys are 'from this
---localitj-Brtrcis froe Seaforth
`=end T •ran is t daughter of
Kirrdine.
Goderich may, hold a special
place in ,,their, hearts because it
was in this town that Mr. and
Mrs. Brady met and fell in love!
Bruce began his skating career
in Seaforth but later became a
member- of the Preston Club,
mostly, because more ice time
was• a"vaiaable for0figctre skaters,
1°fis last club was Stratford.
Althoegh Bruce specializes in
pair and dance skating, he has
competed in every facet of the
figure skater's world.
.,Fran began skating, in
Kincardine and then moved in
assisted 'by Dan Carey of
Listowel.
The lift of a figure skating
pro is not an easy one. The
Bradys are on the hop seven_
days
even,—
days a week and their days begin
early and end late. , It has to be
that way in order to get ice time
for their -Skaters.
• Bruce says they put in full.
• days - and their work is off the
ice as well as on it. For instance,
when their students are in school
during the clay, - there are
carnivals to plan complete with
costumes and lighting and music
and -intricate drills on skates.
As well, there is a"'multitude
of paperwork to.be completed in--
eonnecLiskirwith the skaters they
handle - in Goderich alone, there
are 209 skaters!`
And= -in the Uoderith Club,
for instance, there are 10 your
people who are receiving private
instruction. students

worked out with figures and
spins to suit their capabilities.
Two examples of the kind of
work and effort which iy>_, ring
into. the Goderich Figure Ska ing
Club this year, are Pam Craven
and Rusty Ornnmtdy, Pam, 14,
and ° Rusty, 13, in co-operation
with their pros, the Bradys, were
recently successful in, planing
second in the Western Ontario
Novice Dance Competition held
in Galt.
"Pair skaters should work
together for a summer, a fall and
a winter before entering a
championship contest,''-, Mused,
Bruce Brady. ,;`These • two .;just'
began working together before
the competition.. It was hard.
,work for both of them but they
did it. jtacwas quite a remarkable
effort."
"There's. a competition
coming up in Sarnia in March;"
Bruce continued. "This' will
probably be next although there,
has- been no decision'made about
has!et:"
—But there will be a carnival in •
Goderich this seasoh• 'pleat's the
big Pr.'oject of the year and the
Bradys are striving to make this
year's'?" show the very best 'ever.
They will likely do' just that,
You have to start them egrly;y a,fthey are9oingfio develop
a keen interest for figure skating. At
least, that's the way a good"" many, people in Goderich and area 'seem to think judging from the_.
number of youngsters who arse registered for figure skating this winter. Seen here with the club's jz
pros, Bruce and Fran Brady, are (left to right) Sherry" Kotyk, George Dierolf and Laura Raithby,

itoo, for the spirits are high, in
the Goderich Figure -Skating
Club. The Bradys are a large part
of it, of course, but .always in
the background :are the faithful
members of the executive (and
their husbands) who see to it
that the basic structure within,
which the skaters and the pros
operate, is sturdy and healthy
