Everybody loves Christmas. Goodwill
abtjds at Christmas, they say, and joy
and laughter 'is everywhere. There' o -
hatred and greed and devastation at his
time of year. •{
If .that's the case, what's wrong with
the world?
It is just the first yveek in. December.
-the Christmas decorations- I the parks
and at .public buildings sand around the
homes are just beginning to appear and
alteady we've heard reports about
needless vandalism. Christmas lights are
being removed from various places around
.town and Wantonly smashed, In at 'lea's
one instance, it is reported the vandals
• may have been youngsters.
The. classic-. Christmas caper .of all
times, of course, was described recently in
the• London Free Press. In Fort
,Lauderdale, Florida, Santa Claus was
attacked by about 600 youngsters for the
goodies he.was carrying in his pack.
We like ..to -think we' -re civilised these
days and that the Christmas spirit lasts in
most of us the whole year through. It
naturally shakes our faith in the future of
mankind to find that our offspring' seem
to be regressing, not progressing, in some
respects.
There .is no intention here, „to give a
Lecture on thearts of child -raising, 'Who
really knows the answers anyway?
We would urge everyone to have a chat
with their children and describe, to them
:the beayty of Christmas, its purpose, its
beginning. If we car!'- .channel suchp -
.enthusiasm far -Christmas into
constructive ' action, not destructive
foolishness, we .will have given our
youngsters the kind of Christmas gift
parents and adults were .meant to hand
out.
