In,, an unusually short town .
council meeting last Thursday,
only 25 'minutes in length, the . •
town fathers discussed ,three
main•- • pieces of correspondence
dealing 'with community
business.
The first was a letter from the
Ontario Department of Labor
regrlesting that Goderich' make •,
sure its safety inspector
frequently check the ‘amount of
snow buildup on the local arena
root' and on other buildings in •
the community, in an attempt to
avoid a gri.ous e.ccident. should .
the roofs of such buildings....,
collapse. under the weight.
Recreation Committee
Chairman Paul Carroll suggested
that the letter'be referred to his
committee, whom he told
'council, were already looking.
into,„ is matter. .
main portion of the
arena roof," Mr. Carroll noted
did not lend itself to allowing a
large buildup of snow but that
portions over the dressing rooms
might and that these areas were
cleared off periodically."
A second letter, this time
from the office of M.P.P. Charles,
N1acNaughton, informed council
-that the Fong awaited work on a
;plant owned _by Linton ..and
Hirt, would girl ' underway
what 'was termed, "a reasoxra.h,lK,,•,,
length of time:', 7
Although counciljor Stan,'
Profit felt . that '"' the term
"reasonable length of time;' " was
somewhat vague ' council did
agree the important 7thing waS
the company had not forgotten"""
about Goderich altogether. .
—The letter received indicattil
that a, representative 9f the--fi-rm
was , expected to visit the
Goderich area sometime i'n 'late
'November or early December.
and examine'tFiie Site; .for the new
factory.
Council noted this was not as
encouraging news as it might be
"since -a -'representative had been
scheduled to •-visit •Godericb., in
Septembers or. October but had
failed to arrive:
Construction of 'the plant in
question was originally
scheduled to begin in late 1969
'or early inn1.970 but to date no
progress has taken place. The
thdustry was to initially create
23 -new jobs for Goderich and•, in
a long terra forecast'employ up'
to 72 persons: The company was
to be granted a forgiveable loan
from the Ontario Development
Corporation to locate here, _.
.
The electrical, steel'
laminations factory is t be •
!treated •in the new Industrial
Park :and,' almost- all of its
products would be exported ter
American markets. Linton and
Hirst is a British firm.
The final portion of..,
w--eor•respondence dealt with at the
Thursday evening meeting was a
letter from Dr. M. W. Raithby.
containing requested estimates
on repairs and upgrading of the
municipal Dog Pound. Total cost
of repairs according to Dr.
Raithbv would amount to
$722:30 and council -adjourned
to Committee of the Whole to
discuss the -proposals,
