' A chalice remark mad& last Friday
After the meeting_.. of Huron County
Council may predict doom for 4,*'I
Homemaking Clubs if the idem It
contained becomes popular. e seriously
'doubt it',' th.pugh,
During 'the final session .Of county
council for 1971, Miss Catherine Hunt,
Home Economist ',for Huron, • reported
that .950 girls had completed the most
recent course "Dairy Fare" and said that
if present trends continue Huron, there
could well be, 1,000 girls enrolled in the
county's„ 4-H Homemaking courses next
spring.
That would put Hur'oa in a particularly
enviable position. Already, Huron County
beasts the highest number of 4-H

province of Ontario!
On,e casual observer at the meeting
made a remark to the effect that 950 girls
in Huron County were being brainwashed
into thinking that girls* are- destined 'to
become homemakers " one day. Hadn't'
'Miss Hunt . herself stated that „ 4-H
homemaking courses were planned 'to give
" ung lady the broad basis of
knowledge she would need to become a M
good homemaker in later years?
We suppose a feminist would see
something grossly uncouth 'about an'
organised• club which sets out to make
.r
kirls' aware of their femininity and their
p`robable destiny as wives and mothers
anq therefore homemakers. We suppose
there may ,even be some merit for the
'argument that girls should -be taught first
how to compete in society in any field
which appeals to them whether or not it
has s traditionally been a male endeavor.
However, We've seen -the looks of
extreme ,satisfaction on the faces of young
women who have just completed.a sewing
project for the first time. We've heard
their squeals of delightwhile working in
the 4-H leader's kitchen, We've watched
them sit with rapt attention focused -on a
makeup ,demonstration or an exercise
display.
It will be difficult to convince us that
girls _'even today's modern • misses who
tare living in ,`what is thought to be an
enlightened ale -- are not stili girls first
and above all other things.
A good 4-H Homemaking Club„is just
what the doctor ordered fora good many
girls in' Huron County, about 950 last
project to be more explicit. They can.
always become road engineers and truck
drivers and lawyers and scientists but it
won't hurt them to krr,pw how to•`turn a.
hem and bake an apple pie. ,Who knows?
They may even enjoy it despite what
some may think..

I know there are quite a
catching on' at GDCI this year.
The drama club ,has welled to
one of the 'largest and most
enthusiastic groups at the local
high school.
Warren Robinson may well
'take a great deal of the credit for
the rise of drama at GDCI. It has
been Mr. Robinson's practice to'
use large cast plays whenever
possible to utilize the largest
number of students. His theory
seems to be paying off because,
drama now" is coming into its

Our little contest for persons
who contribute personal items
didn't net us a winner last'week
because we , didn't have 15
personal items to report.
However, we had . more than

grateful for the interest shown.
Please keep your Christmas
guests in mind. If your son or
daughter is home from school or
from the city for the holiday,
give us a call to tell us. If you
have a trip planned for the
Chri"stmas season, we'd like tc

jot down their names and let us
have that list. , Sometimes ' if
people are expected in town,
their visit -could be much more
pleasant with the greetings of
another old .friend who
happened to read pin the

I've had a few enthusiastic .
calls„ about a Consumers:
Association in Goderich but
unless more concern is voiced'^
the next few weeks, I'm afraid it
will be necessary fo abandon the
project for another year orK so.
This Consutners Association,
you . see, is like everything else
that is, worthwhile. It will take
work and workers are,
unfortunately, few. - •
I've said it before and I guess
it bears .repeating, although I
_wonder. Unless, there .is some
active interest shown in this
undertaking, it just will not
become a reality in -Goderich.
There has to be someone here to
