Humorous? You bet. But if you look deeper into the flleatlingbehind the poets— you'll find the unmistakable touch of loneliness which seems to strike so many elderly people. We think this loneliness might become more pronounced .at this time of year. . When everyone- else is busy preparing for the gala season ahead — able to be out sbopping,well enough to bustle, a.roun.d. I n the kjtchen, chipper enough to climb up and decorate; sharp enough todo fine needlework—elderly folk soni times get lost in the shuffle and forgotten. • We k•now.....tbat some o,rgani z a;ti OTS in town remember the elderly at Christmas. We:ye been in touch with both nursing homes ' in town, .for instance, and' . discovered there are those who visit the old people at Christmas to make their days a little brighter• at the Yuletide season. _ We wonder, though, if 'we put enough effort -forth, in this-tfepertmeat.- We would urge everyone this Christmas to keepm.,the senior citizens—especially those whose mobility is hampered by `aches and pains brought -on by old age— in mincq. The sight of children is always a delight for the golden generation, but just plain good spirits and friendly faces are never amiss. i_ !-. LastP , week's column concerning our Christmas issue has netted at least one- reply•and' „ we sincerely thank Kilda Hirst, convener • for ' the Legi Sf Auxiliary's Christma$,Bazaar for writing-. • Mrs. Hirst reminded us of the date of the event — Thursday, December 9 --and also told •us aboutthe natuxe.of the bazaar. I believe it may be something „just a little different inthe way of . bazaars for this town. I am fold the bazaar is to be a co-operative venture with the T,egion ladies convening' and hosting a kind of pre -Christmas showing for several groups and individuals in and around Goderich. 1VIrs. Hirst reports that aiding the Legion Auxiliary will -pe the • folks. • at the workshop of retarded._ adult'; the Salvation. Army; IODE Ahmeek Chapter; -tebekah- ' Lodge; Goderich Rangers; Jack Clements' blind crafts; the. Goderich Nursing Home; and nine local women who will dis'- .{j y their Trafts. • "I do think it would be nice if the people of Goderich came out to buy some of their Christmas gifts and baking from these people," writes Mrs. Hirst. , "A lot of time and thought have gone into these gifts." I agree: For busy women who do not have time to attend more than one bazaar, the - Legion bazaar is one way to 'support • more than one group and go but to only' one event. The party provided by the Crediton Women's Institute had all the trimmings with birthday' cake, candles, hats and"a gift for each celebrant . presented -• '• by the president, Dolores Shapton. The variety - program introcucedby Jean Neil included tap dancing by Mona Hodgins; a -vocal:quartet-4 Lois, -Hodgins; Roxy Weber, Doreen Browning, and Margaret Buxton; a skit by. Donna - Bushfield and Doreen Browning; musical numbeis and a sing -song with Lois Hodgins, piano, and Mr. Sawyer, violin. Lunch was served by the ladies with volunteers from the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority assisting with residents to ancj from the program. Mrs. J. Finkbeiner, a former' resident of the Crediton area, ' than'ked the ladies on behalf.,.ol the residents.
