Remember the elderly
With a recent edition of the Huronview

verse which reads: '
i get up each morning, dust off my wits;
Pick up my paper and read the obits,
If my name, is missing I know I'm not
dead; -
So I eat a good breakfast and goback to
bed.
Humorous? You bet. But if you look
deeper into the flleatlingbehind the poets—
you'll find the unmistakable touch of
loneliness which seems to strike so many
elderly people.
We think this loneliness might become
more pronounced .at this time of year.
. When everyone- else is busy preparing for
the gala season ahead — able to be out
sbopping,well enough to bustle, a.roun.d. I n
the kjtchen, chipper enough to climb up
and decorate; sharp enough todo fine
needlework—elderly folk soni times get
lost in the shuffle and forgotten. •
We k•now.....tbat some o,rgani z a;ti OTS in
town remember the elderly at Christmas.
We:ye been in touch with both nursing
homes ' in town, .for instance, and'
. discovered there are those who visit the
old people at Christmas to make their
days a little brighter• at the Yuletide
season. _
We wonder, though, if 'we put enough
effort -forth, in this-tfepertmeat.-
We would urge everyone this Christmas
to keepm.,the senior citizens—especially
those whose mobility is hampered by
`aches and pains brought -on by old age— in
mincq. The sight of children is always a
delight for the golden generation, but just
plain good spirits and friendly faces are
never amiss.

LastP , week's column
concerning our Christmas issue
has netted at least one- reply•and' „
we sincerely thank Kilda Hirst,
convener • for ' the Legi Sf
Auxiliary's Christma$,Bazaar for
writing-.
•
Mrs. Hirst reminded us of the
date of the event — Thursday,
December 9 --and also told •us
aboutthe natuxe.of the bazaar. I
believe it may be something „just
a little different inthe way of .
bazaars for this town.
I am fold the bazaar is to be a
co-operative venture with the
T,egion ladies convening' and
hosting a kind of pre -Christmas
showing for several groups and
individuals in and around
Goderich.

Army; IODE Ahmeek Chapter;

Rangers; Jack Clements' blind
crafts; the. Goderich Nursing
Home; and nine local women
who will dis'- .{j y their Trafts.
• "I do think it would be nice
if the people of Goderich came
out to buy some of their
Christmas gifts and baking from
these people," writes Mrs. Hirst. ,
"A lot of time and thought have
gone into these gifts."
I agree: For busy women who
do not have time to attend more
than one bazaar, the - Legion
bazaar is one way to 'support
• more than one group and go but
to only' one event. I hope to see
you -.there.
