Church -union again

REV. PETER G. Si-. DON,

`When we think of gratitude,
we of course must also consider
the sin of ingratitude. A child is
born into this. world, the most
helpless of all creatures, For
years it receives the devoted
care, provision and' affection of
parents or those who stand in
the place of parents. If, when a
child , growi, up, it becomes
indifferent, /cold 11 ' rigrale tiT,
• it arouses universal indignation
in the human heart. Ingratitude
is, a meaner sin than revenge.
Revenge is rep-ayment with evil
for evil. Ingratitude is repayment
of good with evil. a•

The sin of ingratitude is very -
prominent in our 'society today.
Each year, thousands of. letters ,
Christmasrn time a 17s7ct—to
Santa Claus. Each 'of these
letters asks for something. One
year, after Christmas was aver;
one letter came to say :`Thank'
you". -
Gratitude works miracles in
our relationship to God, and to ,
one another. A Christian lady
wag shopping in a department'
store, and was treated very
courteously by one of the clerks.
Acting upon impulse. when she
got home, she wrote a letter to
the manager thanking him, that
he had'this type of employee in
his business. In response to her
letter, he wrote, "It happens to
be one of those dark rainy days,
which makes me all the 'more
grateful for the bright friendly
spirit of your'k'ind note".

Dr.Moore predicts union
The Moderator of The United
Church of Canada, Dr. Arthur B.
B. Moore, • predicts_ that his
church . will unite with the
Anglican and Christian (Disciples
of Christ) Churches within 10
years.
"1 an convinced that iariiing
the churches'together is essential
if we are to exercise a
responsible C.hri•stian
stewardship of ourselves and
our .resources,” Dr. Moore, Sid"'
in an•i'nterview prior to the ninth
meeting of the General
Commission on Church Union in
Windsor, Ontario, December 2-7.
"In going our separate ways,
we duplicate sepvices, we
duplicate ' personnel, we•
duplicate all sorts of things," he
said..
"Now I don't think of church
union as a ,big merger or
anything like that;.it-i,t were just.
that I wouldn't be for it. But it
does affect the way in which we
'deploy our resources. Another
side of it is this: 1 think each one
of us is less than we ought to be.
We ought to know a richer type
of society, • a richer sort of
...co -m m-unit .`', :a- ---gr -a-te-r---
understanding• of Christ, and I
think this Only comes as we
begin to break down the walls
and ,share with each other," Dr.
Moore said.
"So I. believe in . - the
ecumenical relationships which
lead, to co-operation and I
believe • in church union itself
land work toward it," he added.
D'r. 'Moore says he is "no
prgphet", but believ", but believes the union
between Anglica'n;United
Christian . (Disciples of Christ)
churches will take place within
the decade of the '70s.
There are a number of church
unions being negotiated around
the world at this time, but no
---others -arc--apparent ' in Ca nada'
he said.
As co -Chairman of the
General Commission on Church
Union, Dr. Moore will be one of
the presiding officers at the
