Who was the first white child
,born in Goderich? Presumably,
,,.......
nobOdy kept track of Indian
babies; in fact, no government
branch kept any birth records in
tile early years of settlement.
The question about the first
baby arises pow as result of an
enquiry addressed to
Clerk -Treasurer J. Harold Walls,
by Mrs. Courtland Lee, Mount
Clemens, Michigan. Slie. Writes:
"My great -great-grandfather,
Goderuh.Crouter Benton,
according to-- family tradition
was the first white child born in
Gdeicli. • I woiild like very
Much , to know' if there is a
record of his birth."
Mr.: Benton died Nov. 21,
1902, aged 64, andso was born
in 183, 11 yeaik after - the
beginning of settleinent here.
The first marriage was. in 1829,
'only two years after the
settlement began, the partieS-
being William Gooding (son of
W.F.-yand Jane GoOte. Brothers,
Jasper and Edwin married Mary
and Nannie Goode, daughters of
Ronald Goode, from Ayrshire.
First of these cerbmonies took
place in Detroit, there being no
.clergyman in Goderich.
-Rev:: Robert „F. , ,Campbell,.
first Anglican minister, arrived in
1934, and his first recorded ,act
here was a baptism. James andRebecca Peacock, of Gi4rich
township, brought a child for
baptism, on January 2, 1835.
tlistory-prov),des,7.,,Its',-, with

PeteOck; it is unlikely that, he
was the first Godericirliative.
the family name.„was once well
known. Belden's' Atlas records
that James Peacock farmed on
Lot 19,, Con 1, Goderich
township (Bay field road.)
The usually . reliable. Atlas
states that "the first -white child
to be born in Goderich was a
boy called John,son of Samuel
Gibson. The Canada Company
gave him 100 acres of•lind.
Unfortunately, no date is.
mentioned. Samuel Gibson is.
not immediately identified, but .
the name was',well known in the
northern part of the county.
There was a Benton in
Coderich in the 1830'S, all right,
Isaac, of that name, purchased
from the Canada Company on
April 12, 1832, the Cobourg St.
lot originally numbered, and
the Lighthouse Street lot behind
it. He sold these lots in 1834 to
W. F. and J. K. Gooding: In the
deed from the Canada Company,
the only information about
Benton is .that hewas a
,merchant.
This deed, one, of the earliest
recorded.. here, bears the
,signature of Robert G. Dunlop.
• as registrar. He was a retired
navy captain, brother -of Dr.
William Dunlop. Harry" Ford,
former registrar of deeds for
Huron, discovered that Capt. -
Dunlop was the first registrar,
anyt'. found
.office was 'orf' South Street.
Deputy registrar was David -Don,
reputedly a jovial young man,.
noted as . a good singer and
flaUtist.
The printed form of this deed
sets forth that George IV
empowered the Canada
Company to sell land, and this
particular transaction -is -
validated by William Allan and
Thomas Mercer Jones, as
"attorneys" for' the company.
Witnesses were James Robertson
Stanton and Arthur Cruickshank
Webster, both, of "York."
Benton paid the company "ten
pounds currency" for the lots.
So,far as dates go, Isaa
Bentocould have been the
.father of Goderich C, Benton.
Mrs. Lee, the great -great-
granddaughter, writes that
"GodericIF. Benton and, his wife,
Jemima Pliller,had a son, Henry,
born in Goderich in 1866,
according to his daughter.
The family moved to Port
Huron and the to.Mt.. Clerrions
in 1875. Goderich Benton WLigla

parents-in-law, four of his
children .and .a -daughter-in-law;

Clinton Grove Cemetery a short
distance from ' my horne...A
daughter of Godertch Benton,
Alice, married Augustus
Canfield, a grandson of Christian'
