Autumn Fantasy
BY LO9NA VINCENT
I wandered far from cities' noiS); haunts
To •where a valley dreams in quietude
,And -there I found. the Maitiand-winding free
Her'silver skein around the misty hills.
And gypsy bands of trees marched down the bank
To flaunt their crimson cloaks against the breeze.
ame an' honoured guest at beauty's feast
Where water turns tO wine in sunset fires
And bread is served to sate the hungry soul .
While others.seek for crusts in crowded ways..-----""
,Then all the earth seefned Mine and Heaven's space,
Incense from the fields and seagull's grace.
The MUSIC of a distinat '' -7--
Joined gentle bi,rdsongs floating on the air
Until the dusk caSt down her flowing veil
And lit the candles in the dark above.
My gyfisy band of trees all silent now,
With folded cloaks, had 'slipped-intO the night
Aril left me.dreaming on that misty bank
In perfect harmony with earth and sly.
Then softly I arose and slowly traced
The winding river to its final sleep "\—,--T •
.Where pale leaves rest& like the first few -tears
or weeping trees.
Such beauty brought a stab of pain to dwell
Within, the childlike,w,onder of my soul
For sOOn th.e gypsies sadly shed their clOaks
And stood with gaunt limbs shivering in the cold.
(The above lines are dedicated to the George Ross family
. Whose lovely wilderness property in the 'Maitland River
'Valley was the source of inspition.)
