It 'is understood that this association. vyouldwjeceive the complaints and comments of- local consumers'" dello -have sOrrrettri l ''°° "~sib,.,. about the products they buy. The type of ,action .,which would be subsequently taken would depend on the nature of the problem, we suspect. Just a few weeks ago, Miss Stephaine Blackstone of the 'National Department of Health and Welfare, Food • and Drug Directorate, was in town. She, too; urged local consumers to become more alert concerning the foods and drugs they buy,: and to make their likes and dislikes; their cpncerns and their fears, known to her branch of government. She agreed that the most efficient way to accomplish this would be to work through a local Consumers' Association. In recent•Months, we've had a num4er of women (a very small 'dumber, unfortunately) 'who have given notification of their interest in a Consumers' Association in Goderich. However, we are certain there are more housewives as well as their husbands who are vii lyc._cancesned about the problems facing consumers in today s competitive society. For that reason, we are beginning a two-point project immediately. First, we are soliciting information about forming a local Consumers' Association. with a view to establishing 'such a group in Goderich this winter; and we are requesting that all Goderich and area ?persons ,interested in membership in a local Consumers' Association would telephone this office leaving their names, addresses --- and telephone humbers. We , trust that' you will accept this invitation to do something constructive about the shoppers' plight., Call today. • As you can tell from .-The Distaff Side this •week, I'm • preparing myself , for an onslaught - of telephone calls - from women (and men-) who are ' interested in a. Consumers' Association in-Goderich. . There's no"doubt about it, A Consumers' Association would be a terrific addition to this town and I'm just keen enough to see it begin that I've, decided to take the initial steps. I telephoned headquarters in bttawa and asked for/ information concerning th/ formation - ,-of a group ip 'Goderich. 1 was referred "to M Brown of St. John, Queb! tro whom I have written. .1 expecting an answer very soo . perhaps in time -for next w newspaper. • 1 really began to.fhii.nk/ this thing over .after talking t Mi% Stephaine 'Blackstone o the National Food, , and Drug Directorate ,Miss Bla kstone convinced me that one of the 'greatest aids her depart ent has -is 'people who take the time and the e'fort to voice the .opinions concerning foods an drugs in Canada. • Miss Blackstone noted that if a consumer finds a fly. in a pound,, of butter, for instance, that information should be forwarded to her department ;naming the • company who manufactured the• butter. One Complaint might not bring about an ,all-out investigation of the manufacturer, of .course, 'but if there were enough complaints about : that one particular _com.pany;_it_.could necessitate:.a visit by . the food and drug fJ c, m -inspector. Miss Blackstone admitted that most people are not sufficiently concerned about their problems to sit down and write • a fetter to the food and • drug directorate w:. • but she says that if there were a local Consumers' Association, they .,night be adequately interested 'to make a quick telephone call to someone who would' have the concern to pass the information along. That is, apparently, how a Consumers' Association gives service to a community. It takes the eomplaints ce the local corisamers, compiles them into a list to discover any similarities there may be, ,tforwards the problems to the best sources to get the most satisfactory results a,nd fpeds back any,, developments to the tom unity, You could say a i1\gin. x n r ..r n.•n r HdN,/N.IN.l4t lora consumers', Association .Would ,be •a kind bif go-between for the people who shop in the +onlmunity and the people .who sell'. - 1f you are interested in becoming t member of a local asSpOation when one is formed (thereA s no obligation of any kitid; ' as I understand it), would ;bu • please telephone the nal --Star office. and leave your :.name, address' ' and telephones numberwith the girls ~r1alit i destt,? .
