Vikings senior football team took over undisputed possession of first, n1 a ce ill the Huroh-Perth • Conference here last Wednesday, by, defeating- the Exeter South Huron Panthers 13-2, Both , teams were undefeated in three previous starts. The game, which had been billed as "the battle of the giants' was somewhat marred by rain which fell throughout most of 'the afternoon, but both tarns were able to show enough of their 'potential to give the fans a probable preview of what they .can expect when these two teams meet again in the'playoffs. ; ,The teams battled through, a -scoreless first •quarter., but the Vikings- drew- first btood-in the. second quarter when fullback Rdn Brown completed a 63 yard drive by going over from the three yard line for the Vikings first touchdown. The scoring play was preceded by a 21 yard sweep by fullback Gary Lounsbury 'and a 39 yard pass and run play from O'Brien -to end Gary Yeoman. The Panthers were handed ********* GDCI photos by Don* McGee ******** some glorious opportunities in the second half when the Viking offensive backfield, had trouble holding on.to the wet ball. In all, the blue and white squad fumbled five times. HoweVer, the Viking defence saved the bacon. Especially on two occasions when the Panthers had the ball inside the 'Viking ten yard line but could not score. The Viking defence, led by Tim O'Brien, Al Drennan and Gord° IVic,Lellan were outstanding. The only points the Panthers could muster came on a pair of siligles on 38 yard and 34 yard punts in the third and fourth quarters. The Vikings put the game away 'with a fourth quarter touehdOwn_by Gary!'..Lounsbury ,na.a.iour yard slant-, set up by.a -• 22 yard pass play from, Tom -.- O'Brien to Gary Lounsbury and a 26 yafd fake reverse quarterback Brian. The football teams are in action again _today (ThurSday) playing in Stratford against Stratford Central. The Vikings do not play again'at home until the playoffs. The junior Vikings had a. busy week, splitting a pair of games. They defeated Listowel 42-8 ,in Listowel on Tuesday, and then lost to unbeaten Exeter South Huron here on Tl'thrsday 24-2. Against Listowel, fullback Doug Marshall went five yards off tackle in the first quarter for the opening Viking T.D. His.....runhing mate, Lawrence Lassaline went over on a similar play, in .the secon& quarter. This one was converted-for,tho,extra points on a run by 'quarterback Larry Donnelly, to make the half-time score 14-0. Listowel got on the board with a third quarter maj9r by Paul Beirnes who scooped up a Goderich fumble and ran 35 yards for the scdre. It was converted on a two pointer by ()An Wool'. • The Vikings came bU with four touchdowns of their'own to make the game a runaway. harry Donnelly hit Casey Wildgen on a 40 yard pass and run play for one of them, and passed eight yards to end Roger Legere for another. Doug Marshall took care of the other two on running plays of 15 and eight yards. Two of • the Vikings' second -half • touchdowns were . converted. Both were two-point conversions on passes from, quarterbick Larryo Donnelly. The first was thrown to Doug Marshall, the second to Lawrehce Lassaline.
