of the items playing havoc with
the family budget. "(According
to Statistics, Canada," he said,
"milk prices have incrvsed•18.3

whilethe cost of food generally
has gone up 12.9 per cent." ,
„Milk deserves our scrutiny
because it is a product for which

Says old tree should stand
Godericlh town councillor
Elsa Haydon came to a very
strong defence of a tree located
in Goderictr, • at the regular
ipeeting, of the, Town Council
Thursday of last week.
The protest stemmed from an
announcement made by Finance
Committee,. Chairman Dave
Gower•that while crews werp•at
the job of tutting down dead..
trees in various spots throughout
the coinmunityi, they would be
asked to remove a large Chesnut
tree located behind the town
hall, police Station area. .Mr.
Gower excilained that the, tree is
in the way of cars turning in that
area,and therefore would be cut
down.
Following this report 'Mrs.
Haydon came to the tree's
defence pointing out that the
tree is very old and that for all
these years everyone has
managed to live with it, arid that
she failed to see why things had
changed so much all of a sudden.
"I am not one to stand in the
way of progress for the sake of a
' tree," she pointed - out later,
"but there is no real need to cut
this orie and I disapprove
strongly of having it removed."
Mrs. Haydon said the tree is
easily 60 to 70 years old.
Mr. Gower pointed out that
in his opinion the tree had
already started to die,and in the
interests of economy it would be
cheaper to remove it now when
the crews were engaged in a tree
removal proje'ct.—,

."The government can attack

time for action now," he said.

before cutting it doWn.
Mayor Harry Wo'rsell
promised Mrs. Haydon that the
situation wony) be further
studied before any action was
taken, and a gObil look would be
takerf at the tree in question.
Reg Jewel, chairman of the
parks committee, announced
that with the end of the summer •
season his committee had laid
off two men as of September 30.
HP also reported » that he htd
received a number of -calls,from
concerned, businessmen in ' the
square re ion saying that the
.new socL.Jcently put down in
the park would die if it wAn't
watered.Proper action was
taken, he said, in that direction
, with hoses being hooked up to
fire hydrants in the area arid the
grass well watered. Mr, Jewell
alsoreported that an Oritario•
Consumers Association van
would be parking in the park for
one afternoon in- the'near future
as part of an Information drive
by the group.
Reeve Paul Carroll asked
council for • direction on---» the
matter of purchasing a block of
13 acres on the »river flat near
the harbour. Negotiations were 7.
already underway • with the
Maitland Conservation
Authority and council agreed to
withhold action until the
4conservation authority indicates
their intentions in the matter.
A discussion of repairs
needed on a house owned by the
Town of Godericil took a great
, deat'pf time, at last, Thursdays
meeting:- Councillor Haydon
• who had been to the site and
inspected the premises- reported
that in her •opinion the repaits
necessary were urgent ,and had
to be completed before winter.
Haydn explained that
the' roof had to be replaced)and
the present 'veranda should be
" torn down and replaced by a
new porch. The roof she said
was leaking so badly that
considerable damage was being
done to a. recent ' interior
decorating project, completed by
the town, and she also said the
veranda was in such a sad state
of repair that it was dangerpus.
"No repairs to`the outside of
this house, short of small
maintance work, have been
carried out in the past eight
years," she said. A quote of
• $1995.04 was submitted as the
estimated cost of repairs.
Council discussed the matter
at length and finance committee

out that the property committet•

budget for the year and could
not afford to undertake this
