About the election
At this stage of the game, of course,
everything. , is still fairly Tow -key.
Politicians, taking a page from athletes,
don't want to "peak" too soon. So the
.ca"mpaign will 'start off- slowly, with the
t 4ree leaders and. their candidates saving
their big ammunition until the waning
days when starhrrtg announcements' artct
platforms will remain with voters until
they get their ballots marked.
However, . some of the trends are
already evident.
The Progressive Conservatives appear
to be aiming their big guns at the NDF,
apparently fearing them more than the
Liberals.
The Liberals, meanwhile, are using
regional government, assessment and the
plight of farmers as their main electidn
issues and Stephen Lewis and his cohorts
are going to ply us with nationalism and
reduced taxes.
It's much too early to start picking out
public trends, and we imagine most
people will be comparatively -
uncommitted • until they step inside the
voting. booth.
°~ ^• lH&wevek;- i't~ bej'tooves" ul all to listen,-
and
isten -and watch closely to what is being said so
that our ballots will be marked in a
knowledgeable way. As
Perhaps it's too bad we couldn't take
all the good policies being presented by
the three parties and mold them into one
government. We rather enjby the idea of
all of us having. jobs, security,' more
benefits ....and lower taxes.
There hasn't been ,a government yet
that could swing it though!

Here it is Monday morning,
,gain land I'm just- back from a
few short days out-of-town. I'm
really -'not in the groove -for
for
writing this column or any other
items, for that matter:
Fanny thing what ‘holidays

.We had quite a . varied
vacation , even .though ,we were
^
away for just fourr full days. W,e,,
visited with _frien.ds and relatives
all along ,the route and 'as you
might imagine; the most
.common topic for discussion
was, the upcoming , election
Ontario.
If there was one continuous
tone all across' Ontario (we went
as far east •as Belleville and as far
'south as Picton) it was " the
feeling that the New' Democratic
Party is making tremendous
'strides.
That may be .encouraging to
same in our riding and
discouraging to others, but it
seemt c
s to be a facwhich annot

imagine that - unless the program
is carefully handled; ft 'could get
out of -Vontrol arid become more
of a headache than anything
else.
' For instance, I once knew a
- kindergarten teacher who was so
eT ery -very professional that she
searched out each chi.ld's
p%oblems and'faults'and tried to
put psychology to work. -
In this teacher's. class, there
were very few normal children.

One' of the main sources of
dissatisfaction with the present
Progressive Conservative
government seems to be the.
-educational system in the
province. .Those persons to
whom I , spoke were unhappy
• that education was costing so
much and producing so poorly.
Many were purely disgruntled
at the changes in the educational
WS -tem which 'have been made
such as county boards without
any improvement in the
classroom being evident to the
parents through -their
youngsters.
I can sympathize.
For instance, t I spoke to one
mother whose son is not doing
particularly well in -school. It
had .been discovered that her
child had a learning handicap
and there was great concern in
the school to do what had,to, be
done to correct it. •
The mother wasn't really
convinced that the child's
learri`ing disability was as serious
as the tests had shown. It was
nothing but strong motherly
instinct which told her that....
and, perhaps the fact that she is
a former elementary school
' teacher herself but there was
little she could do about it. The
school was in control of the
situation.
The school, she argued, was
giving all kinds of sophisticated
tests, tabulating theme' results- and
turning the `problems.- overt-to'
specialIy 'trained teaching
personnel when what wad really
needed, the mother fell; was
more drilling and .more
downright teaching at the
primary level. And,. coming from
a former school" teacher, who
can really argue Without
knowing the child and the
{articular school in which the
child is situated?:
just embarking upon tints special
education service where students"
With special learning disabilities
Will be assisted to reach new
i plastic heights. However I can
..Many, ' many, she found; had
`deep-seated' problems which
had. t -d be dealt with
immediately before the student
became warped and untrainable.
To be perfectly, , fair, there
were times when this teacher
recognized real difficulties, but
sometimes the problems she
found were nothing more serious
than the fact that the child had
not been properly disciplined at
home, or had neVer had access to
crayons and coloring books, or
had -.nest had the advantage of
parents or older' brothers and
sisters who read to him.'
So -instead of quietly setting
about to correct the child's little
difficulties, ' this very, very
professional teacher would
summon the parents to , the
school and put a fancy name to
the child's problem, thus
frightening the parents to some
extent. The parents would often
then, upset the child even more
with their blundering efforts at
home to help the teacher. The
teacher. would further
antagonize the situationat
school by testing and assisting
until the 'poor little kindergarten
child DID have a problem Z,hich
was difficult to correct.
I guess what it boils down to
is a case of too much concern by
professionals who are just too
professional tote patient and
that could be a real headache
which would be difficult to
eliminate.
I think what . people are
saying is that they are grateful
for the department, of
-*education's concern in the
province of Ontario, but in some
ca"ses that concern is much too
sophisticated tb be
practical and more important
than that, it carries with it the
danger that more problems than
necessary' will be
treated . ,. found and
