Would you believe it? — I'm
in Merrie Old England — in Jolly
Old ,London — no less.
A very fine record-breaking
tri over (made it in 5 hours 55
"minutes — just zoomed right in
on target), landed at Gatwick
and took a slow train into
London. As often as you have
seen pictures,, etc., of London
and the many sights here — you
have to be, IN . . . FEEL . .

On the flight over, 1 met two
young couples, one of w gm has

He and his wife were very nice
and it helped make 'a very
pleasant trip even more

Anyway, the Captain of the

A pioneer of Southwestern
Ontario radio, the late W. T.
(Doc) Cruikshank was honored
in Wingham on Sunday, October
3. ' A memorial. plaque • was
dedicated in Cruikshank Park for
the .founder of CKNX radio and
television stattorrs hodied last
April at the age of 3. f ;
The plaque actually a replica
of the unfinished original, was
unveiled- by Mr. Cruickshank
widow, Mabel, assisted by her
son G. W. (Bud) Cruickshank.
At one time a chauffeur for a
Wingham doctor, • Mr.
Cruickshank laid the
groundwork for CKNX radio in
1926 when he assembled a
transmitter from plans outlined
in a copy of Popular Mechanics
magazine. _ '
He later opened a radio repair
shop and for the next 10 years
broadcast programs to listeners
in the area under an amateur
radio licence.
One explanation for the
nieknaTne "Doc" goes back to
his repair shop days when he
carried his tools and equipment
in a Mack doctor's handbag.
The more widely 'held theory
of origin stems from his
chauffouring of Dr. J. P.
Kennedy- in his spare time. He

held down two other jobs,
working 10 hours daily in an
iron foundry and evenings as a
projectionist at the local theatre.,

CKNX-TV chief engineer Scott
Reid, he felt 'it was a necessary
part of the community.
At the conclusion of the
ceremony the 1?Vingham Business
and Professional Women's Club
presented Mrs. Cruickshank with
a scrapbook detailing her
husband's accomplishments. A
duplicate of the scrapbook was
presented to Wingham Mayor
Dewitt Miller and will- be placed
on public exhibit in the town
hall.
