Shot Through the Lung.
Seaforth, Ont., May 29.—A young
lad named Fred Coventry, aged 17,
was shot through the upper part of the
right lung today by a shot gun which
was accidentally discharged while in
the hands of a companion. He suffered
much for several hours but died to-
night. Much sympathy is felt for the
boy's parents, he being an only son
and an, exemplary young fellow. He
was employed in Logan & Co's bank,

Drowned in the Trent.
Campbellford, May 29.—A very sad
drowning accident ocurred here this
evening about '° 7.30. Three' young
ladies, Misses Hardens, Harcourt and
Sheppard, while out boating on the
Trent river, came in contact with the
pier of the old railway bridge, eapsiz-
ing the boat Miss Hardenssucceeded
in getting on the pier; the others were
carried down the stream. Mr.. W. W.
Cummings, bookkeeper at the Trent
Valley woollen mill, risked his life by
jumping from the foot•bridge and sue
seeded in rescuing Miss Harcourt when
only a rew feet from the dam. Miss
Sheppard °being further out in the
swift current passed under the bridge.`
Being trio weak to grasp the ropes
which were lowered from the bridge to,
touch her hands, she was carried over
the dam and drowned. Her body has
not yet been found. Miss Sheppard is
a daughter of Charles Sheppard, of
Meaford, Ont. ' She was a teacher in
the public school here.
Tried to End her lie.
Niagara Falls, May 29.—Just after
6 o'clock lastnight the strollers below
the inclined railway at the Prospect
park saw a young lady walk out on - a
projecting rock and throw herself into
the water. The current here is quite
swift, and was fast carrying the young
lady out into the river, when two
young men of this place, B. F, Vanden-
berg and S. J. Deyin, ran to rescue
her. Delyin quicklyy threw aside his
hat and coat and jumped into the wat
er, and after a.struggle succeeded in
bridging her to the shore, where Mr.
Vandenberg landed them safely on dry
ground. The young woman was ta-
ken'to police headquarters, where dry
clothing was fnrnished, and a physici-
an called. As soon as he ;arrived he
made an examination, and ordered the
would-be suicide to be taken to a hotel
as she was about to become a mother,
She was taken to the American, where
a few hours later she gave ,birth t o a
healthy male•child.
