=DEAR= -EDITOR:
-far EdiCor,
I was interested to read Mrs.
Keller's views on `working
mothers being able to claim
babysitting expenses.
For sometime now I. have
been thinking of how much our
teenag•e daughters earn
babysitting, usually 50 cents an
hour. Once my 'daughter was
paid 35 cents an hour, with four
young children.," Needless to say..
that was the last at that
particular, home.
Salaries and wages have gone
up considerable, but not the
babysitters'. I wonder what it
would be like if they went out
on strike.
Also many people leave it to
call up Friday or Saturda' at
suppertime when the kids have
made arrangmenis, also, to go
out.

From, the Distaff Side
Was it belligerence?
We ,had ,..occasion this week to, be in
Provincial Court here.in Goderich. We
were not there to report names of
`Offenders Bind their charges. ane'could say
we were simply observing for the large
portion of the day.
While we do not wish to 'impose any
undue hardship upon the court officials,
we YYoutd..W.extend_ ars invitation to 4
citizens to spend a day or a half=day in
Provincial 'Court here. It is an, education
that few of us can afford to miss. '
In Monday's court, for instance, the
bulk ''of the charges were Iajd against
youngsters who would be between '16 and
20 or 21 year's of age. The charges ranged
from somewhat simple traffic
misdemeanors to rather" serious criminal
• offences.
Belligerence — or something'very akin
:to it — seemed to permeate the court
room.. Gone was the rather awesome
atmosphere which used -to prevail such a
few short years ago. In its place was a new
kind of hautlness which wasn't at ail
,reassuring for some of" the more. mature
persons in attendance there.
We were reminded of conversations in
..the past with parents, as well as young
• people; concerning the apparent lack of
respect for pojice officers these days: We.
remember hearing statements • from
persons of different ages that police
officersoften seem to have '`a 'special
dislike for certain young people and
some't les, °heave '•absolutet-y the wrong
impression with the 'teenagers with whom
they are working.
After, sitting in on this court session,
we couldn't help but be sympathetic
towards the police officers, the lawyers,
the probation officers and other court
officials who deal day in and day out with
young people who obviously care so little
for law and order and -their democratic
right to a fair hearing in court. . '
We can understand a little better now
why some police officers ,band their
associates could. grow cynical and
suspicjous of the younger generation.
We do not say -that., ..would be
admi rable:„. We do say it would not be
surprising.
