Known as one of the three., best aircraft paint shops in North America, inmpetition with one in Indiana and another Oklahoma,U.S.A., the shop has been, aoing' paint jobs in its present location since 1965 and Goderich since 1956 for aircraft ovvnows from Newfoundland to Calgary and a great portion of the north and central United States. - Owned by Don Plumb, a flying enthusiast from Windsor, the Spitfire when completed will tot be one of only three flying in- , North America 'and one of very few privately oWned Spitfires flying in the world. The Indian Air Force at the fib vo, present time is still using a fleet of Spitfires but when they are phased out only one will be kept and the rest are to go' for scrap to 'ensure the value of those Owned Pi-cvately. The estimated value of a flyin"gowell restored World War Two Spitfire is in the neighbourhood of $80,000. The Windsor Spitfire, it is., felt, will probably be the best, most accurately restored aircraft of itstype in North America and• among ,the top models of the world. • - The new paint job involves the removal of all old paint, washing down of the plane mid the sanding off of any rough spots' on its body. When this is completed, the workmen will etch the body with acid to ensure that the paint will fix to the metal well. Then comes a coat of corrosion proofing, two coats of primer and then the final colors for which the paint alone costs' $55 per • gallon. When the two and one "half, week job„iS complete the Spitfire will be an identical. redlica of the planes flown by pilots of the Royal Air Force during "England's darkest hour:" It is_ .uncertain if....this particular aircraft ever saw actual air ), combat during, the war, ' but it did act out that combat when it appeared recently In the movie production of the "Battle of Britain," After completion of the movie Mr. Plumb purchased it from the private owner who,had 113aned it for use in the movie. After the end, of the Second World War, the plane was used by the Irish Air Force before it came into private ownership. , Although the Spitfire---is-a special job it is only one of many planes turned out ,by the Sky Harbour paint shop. In an average year the five full time employees thereturn out- 115 paint jobs to all kinds of aircraft. r, • ".• • E • Ler our Qualified Techniciims put you on a straighter road to safety, comfort and peace -of -mind!
