After 59 days 'on the road
Rob Quaid, a 1'7 -year-old bicycle
enthusiast from Sarnia stopped
over in,Goderich last week to
visit his grandmother before he
peddled his way ' through' the
final day- of a two-month trip
that took 'him through,much of
United States and the eastern
provinces of Canada. •
During -a visit with' his
grandmother, Mrs. Andrew
Bogie, ' the young traveller -
related some of his experiences
to a Signal Star reporter.
"The thing about my trip
that stands' out most in my
mind," he noted, "was the
friendliness of the people I met,
• particularly those in the
-Maritime provinces of 'Canada.
They are a very friendly group."
From Sarnia Rob headed
eastward to Ottawa and then
swung south and east again
' visiting the . cities Of Montreal
and Quebec. From the capital of
that province his tour took his'
southward into the state of
Maine as far an Bangor.
From .BRangor it was back to
' Canada arid Fredricton, New
North from Kingston the
road lead through Algonquin
Park and back south again along
Georgian ,Bay towards home
with the last stop in Goderich.
In all the ' trip totalled 3,500
miles.
When he left Goderich one
week ago tofday he ' had, 8Q more
miles to . roll the 10'speed bike
...before his trip was complete.
`,`Planning started moire than a
year ago," Rob explained, "and.
I worked last summer to raise
the money necessary. My school
work suffered this year because.
my time was taken, up during the
winter making plans for the time
I would be spending .on the
Thad."'
At the start Rob travelled on
$4.00 to $5.00 per day but soon
perfected his spending habits to
the point of living on11.00 1.1.00 or
$2.00 per'day.
Staying in youth hostels

they are, few and ' far between
