Frank has been training and Verna's Choic=e has not been
driving horses now for twelve
.years. He says his- wife ., is
responsible . for getting him
interested in the •first place. He
used to work fdr the Soky
Stables of Toronto, where he
had charge of many ..2:03 and
2:04 horses.
' One that stands out is Baron
Atom, horse of the year in,.1961,
'who has a four year-old mark of
2:02.0. His wife actually#:did
most of the training at this Jime
because Frank had had a bad
spill it Buffalo and was wearing
'a cast from June till Christmas
time. He then became,
disinterested in racing.
"You ,. know, you work
out of the money: in her last
sewn start.'; 'and Noble L.yf had
her first win , of the season at
Goderich Raceway July 21.
Rildehars, p, 2:07.0, is his
brood mare from which he has
three colts,, his first out of her
was Verna's Choice. His wife
owns a riding horse, a beautiful
seven year-old Palomino, and' for
their' children, Janna, Wayne.,
Karen and Brian, .they have a n,
little Shetland pony narrled,Lady.

Better Brother is
H.O. (Bud).Jerry and his wife
Ruth, have a -most beautiful:
home at R.R. 5 Goderich. At the
back of the lot a barn in which
are kept brood mares and colts.
Bud presently has seven
horses, two racing, three brood -
mares, and two . colts., Perfect
Copy and Better Brother are `
two pacers now on the Track.
Better Brother in Bud's"Big
Hope" in the way of racing. He
is a four year-old, with a record
of 2:09 established last year.
Both he and Perfect . Copy are

but of Mary M. Grattan. Bud is

• Clinton and Dresden this year.
Bud and Ruth were married
in 1943, and it .was in .1947
'when they got their • first horse,
Eva Braden,, Bud says she wasn't

anything spetacular, but she
was a.start.
Next came Ima Chips, which
in Mr. Jerry's words, "always
raced goof". She hada record of
2:08.2, She comes from a family
of producing mares, being sired
, ,.. Vlr. Chips,` 2:03'4, out of
Ruth Lee, who was the mother
of Ruth Chips, at one time the
best mare in Canada. Her. sisters
produced several
performers,
He had other horses .in" the:
meantime, Hike' Lady
Axworthy,2:,07.1, Nifty Chief,
who had a record of around
2:05 or 21.06, then Sweet.
Harmony, 2:01, which they lost
in a claiming deal, and Swing
Harmony which they sold.
Excellent luta was retired early
as a brood Mare.
Perfect Copy was next, then
Better Brother. Their sire is
Brother Harmony, • who earned
$96,000.00- in --his Life. Time,
having -beaten every star horse in
the World with the exception of
Good Time: He has .had several
2:05 performers. In one day:
Brother • Harmony. paced tour
heats, all under 2:02, coming in
second twice' and winning two,
One of the top sires, of today,
Gene Abbey was ruled out of
the heats because he couldn't.

career. Frank has him at stud now and has' bred five mares so' far this year.

at Dominion Roads during the,
week, but after five everyday he
is busy With his bobby, horse
racing.
He owns two horses, Pete's
Choice, a trotter, and Crever
Larry, a pacer. The animals are
• housed in stables at Goderich
Raceway which Babe rents from
the Trottin.g Association.
He and his wife, Susan, have
three boys, Kim, Steve and Lee,
all of which help their fattier” In
caring for the horses. His wife
"likes horses, doesn't do much
with. them" says Ijibe. His sons

since he was nine years old. He
used to work -with my family
when they McGees had runners

Cindy Byrd, which he bought as
a yearling, raced a few times,

Clever Larry is a Glenford

George Caldwell used to race
him for Lionel in Toronto where
Clever Larry was timed in 2:07
and 2:08, but because of the
competition, he., was ...}drought
back to Goderich Co race.
In the meantime, Babe had

Adios. The bay, four year-old. mare earned $8,162.00 last.year,

raced his own horse, Terry Mac.

The next horse he trained was

the yearling, colt he has now,
Rhythm's Nancy. Frank raised

and sold him last year for What

Heather, When sixteen, she plans
to apply' for her trainer's and
driver's Iteense. 'l1he youngest
MacDonalds are Nancy, .13,' and •

Frank has been involved with
Standardbreds now for •twenty
years, and has ridden Saddle
horses since he was t.yvelye years
old. He has no plants t� quit the
business, especially with two full
brothers of Miss Belle Bars, and
one half brother, coming along.
