_Bar
(Continued from page one).
Candelight Inn and Tavern had
ueh the same story to tell.
While there are certainly more
young people in the bar ,each
iday, there has been , absolutely
• no pro.blerns, encountered
because of it.
Money does not seem to be
an obstacle for the 'new bar
customers, either, ,although they
are not' drinking to excess. While
most' of the older customers
-"come for the evening, to have
dinner, enjoy a few drinks and
perhaps dance or watch the
entertainment, the younger
clientele simply have a few
drinks, maybe a snack and leave:'
At the Brewers' Retail Store
things were quiet. •
"I was surprised there were so
few kids 'in to buy beer;" said
Pat Osborne. "There was only a •
slight percentage 'of customers
under 21 years and,. all of them
were one -hundred percent well
mannered. here was not much
problem at all,' •
The biggest difficulty for
Osborne and his staff was
checking the identification of
those 18`.years of age arid alittle
bit older.
"They look so young,"
remarked Osborne. "We check
them all very carefully."
Osborne believes that the •
young people who were in to the
store to buy supplies this
weekend are the same ones, who
used .to. have .other buy their
drink for them before it became'
legal to buy their own. .
`tit really has not affected our
sales..much at all," Osborne said.
_.Officials " at the Liquor
ControlBoard of Ontario
admitted they were so busy - over
the Civic Holiday weekend that
a few more customers would
hardly have, made a. difference to
them.'".However, it was .obvious
-that—only—a. young, :.people•
bothered to visit the liquor
store.'
_.._. Economics may have
something to do, with it, ,one
spokesman said. It is possible
that young people just "haven't
got that kind of money". •
Just as at the Brewers' Retain
Store, employees found ' the,
most difficult task was knowing
"what an 18 or 19 year "old
looked like".
"That drop of three years,"
.said one spokesman," requires
that we completely readjust our
thinking. We're used to judging
people at 21 years of age." `
' One thing,which°surprised the
