New hme for teaching nuns
ends crnger of losing. them
BY W. E. ELLIOTT
The Comte—tiff-Char-bonnet,
one of Napoleon's generals, had
a son named Armand Fradcis
Marie, whopcame--. o Canada and
held the title to, the first Roman
Catholic church property in
Goderich ' • •
(Tap the histo `of"Fi`N'rt cr?d"

French nobility,)
D. Armand de Charbonpel,
born in ,France 13years before
the battle of Waterloo,' was
ordained in 1.825, taught in
various religious institutions of
France, in' Baltimore and
Montreal. He was consecrated
Bishop of Toronto in 1850,, and
it is recorded that he founded
St. Michael's College there.
Roman ,Catholics in,
Goderich, even including a
number of French .in employ of
the, Canada Company, were tool'
few to have a church. The parish
priest ' of today, Rev. R.
Moynahan; finds in the records
that Religious observances for
some years depended •iapon4the
benevolence of Waterloo county
Germans'. Naturally, the first
resident, priest was Rev. Peter
Schneider.
A church site,on-North Street
was obtained and a frame church
erected , (Hugh Chisholm,
contractor) in 1843. This was.
the first church building in
-;Goderich:.SeVera-aeeounts +rave-
it that St. George's, on the
Crescent, was under
construction the same,year, but
- the deed of the land, ' to the
(Anglican) Bishop of Toronto, is
dated in February, 1844:) North
Street Methodhsts also built a'
frame church in 1844. , -
?or whatever reason, the
Catholic ,church propeekty was
not registered until 1852, in,the
name of Bishop Charbonnel. The
Diocese`of 3zgndon-:did not. thew
exist; but ' a transfer 'from
Toronto, Diocese took place in
187 2... The - present church was
'built in 1896.
Site 'of the convent, on the
west side of North' Street, was
acquired 'in 1866, and
presumably building took place
then or soon after. In this case,
the title was vested in Rev. Peter
Schneider and successive parish
priests until 1901, when it stood
in the' name , of the Roman
Catholic Episcopal Corporayion
of the Diocese of London, -
In .1948' the parish of St.
Peter's deeded, the school ,
buildir g .to the separate ,school . ,
board, of Goderich., The pupils
all attend St. Mary's school now. .
T+he former St. Peter's school is
used by. the Knights of
\Columbus. '
The old , convent haslong
been inadequate, • if only' by
reason of cramped space, as a
residence for the nuns, members
of the Order of St. Joseph, most
of whom teach -in St. Mary's',
school. Evidently there was at
.one stage a prospect of the
parish losing- the 'teaching staff
However, opportunity -came
for purchase of the Clyde
Everett residence on North
Street, irnmediately south•of the
church. It was for more than 30
years the home of Judge Philip
Holt, then belonged. 10 Andrew
Erskine, and from 1953 to Mr.
Everett, manager of Sheaffer Peh

,Plans call for the construction,
of the plant or ,a portion of land
at the extension of George and
Hill Streets in , the town, s
property which, was recently
purchased by the Town Council
as an industrial park. Clinton
Department of Public Utilities
has installed necessary services
to the site 'iWi 1uding hydro,
water and sewage facilities and
the Public Works department has
begun work on a road bed of the
new streetsnecessary to link the''
si,,W with the rest of the
community.
It is presently estimated that
construction 'will be complete
and the plant ' will begin
operations by November 1,
1971.
Over the past years Clinton
has been facing a downward
trend. in its economy with local
factories either shutting down or
cutting back production. The
announcement of -the new plant
comes :as welcome news. The
closing of the Canadian Forces
Base, which had been located
close by, had also dealt a severe
shock to the community.
